You are right to be concerned about rabies. Skunks are primarily nocturnal , so wandering in the day is probably an indicator that something is not right.
I have two dogs and have had issues with skunks. You do not want to have him make your property the home turf. I had a few try to make my deck there home shelter.
I have used a hose and let the water fall in the direction of the skunk. Do not try to hit the skunk directly or you will find yourself on the receiving end of the smelly spray. Just use the water to send him in a direction away from your property. They do not like to be in direct water fall. It make take a few times if the skunk is already homed in. You can also call local animal control, tell them about the daytime behavior and possible rabies, to get them to respond. Some agencies simply will not respond to skunk calls.
Live traps are OK , but you still have to get the animal from the trap, without it spraying, not a good chance of that happening.
Good Luck.

Call Pest Control & they will set traps & come back for the skunk once it's been trapped. You do not want to get rid of the skunk yourself. That could be a "stinky" job.

We had a skunk family living under our porch...we had to hire a guy who put out live traps at night, and came early in the morning to pick up those that were caught and took them far away. Call your police dept. (non emergency number) and ask them if they have animal control.
I would be worried that he is out in the day light....unless you mean dusk or dawn.

If you don't know anyone that works at a zoo, go to a sporting goods store & buy synthetic "big cat" urine i.e. lion, tiger, puma. Sprinkle around perimeter of your yard/home. Big cat urine = natural predator. Bye-bye skunks, possum, raccoons, groundhogs, deer, you name it.

call your local animal control officer....It is there job to take care of such things...And be careful wild animals that often display no fear of humans sometimes have problems...Such as rabies...
let the trained pro's take care of it for you...That's why we all pay taxes, so use the sources you tax dollars pay for...and for god sakes if you kill it still call animal control and turn over the body to them so they can test it for rabies so they will be aware if they have a rabies problem in the area...Also you must not damage the head....Because the brain is what must be tested.....Good luck and be careful because rabies shots suck......

With any animal that is on your property that is unwanted that is not your animal you can call you local animal control and they will remove it for you. If you don't have animal control call the local police department and they will have someone come and get it.
