After sowing the grass seed i very lightly raked the soil - but the seeds are still on the surface and visible. Will this stop the seeds germinating and the grass from growing or should i put a thin layer of topsoil over the seeds? The grass is meant to start growing within 7 days but the seeds have not changed at all? The soil has been watered well. Any ideas?

Thinking I would be helpful, I just went out to cut the lawn, using a Petrol Honda lawnmower (borrowed from my parnters parents!!) I pulled the chord and nothing happened a few times, so I put on the choke and then it started. I never turned the choke back off again, and I got a good bit of the lawn done and the mower just stopped dead. I emptied the grass bag (which was full as full could be!) and tried starting it again. Its like its locked or something, as the cord will only pull a few inshes then jams. Have I broken the mower?

Can someone please tell me how to get it started and also what that choke thing is for??

Thanks (PS I am blonde....!)

I knew this would happen, I even joked about it at the store. I have issues with plants, but for my bday my mom bought me a beautiful white orchid with two flowers. Three days after I brought it home, one of the flowers looked really dry and fragile and died, then a few days after that the same thing happened to the other one. I don't think I over or under-watered it but I'm not sure what the problem is! I watered it every couple of days letting it drain completely, and it didn't get direct sun, but it it was semi-bright where it was sitting in the kitchen. Can anyone help?

I cut off the stem when the flowers died and its very brown and dry now. Is that normal?

Yes, this is probably a very stupid question--I know that too much bleach will kill the birds, but will a small amount (say a quarter of a cup?)--the fountain holds about 5 gallons of water and is getting pretty green and fuzzy. Is there an alternative that will keep it clean and is bird-friendly? Thanks.

A tree in my yard was 1/2 dead, so we cut it down. The remains of the tree are stacked near our fire pit, and we are slowly burning it away. There are all these "bee" looking bugs all over the larger pieces from the trunk. I was worried it was termites, but I checked for pictures of them, and, thank GOD, they don't look like termites. They fly, have the body of a bee, and have long legs like spiders. GROSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
Anyone have a link I can read up on my bugs that are creeping me out? Or ANY information would be helpful.

I've been reading that right after Thanksgiving is a good time to trim my hydrangea bush back. I am not sure what kind it is (off-white and light pink blooms), but I have had it for about 2 years now and it is starting to look scraggly to me..... I have them on the side of my house next to my steps and they have really grown a lot in these 2 years, it is getting overwhelming near the steps, so I want to trim it up and round it up.

How far down can I trim the bush. I am not terribly worried about not getting blooms next year I am more worried that I will kill the plant...is it possible to trim it down so much that it will kill the plant?

What would you do if it were yours? Thanks!

I am wanting to create an area to park my trailer on my lawn.
I am planning on possibly digging up the grass in that area and digging the entire area around 2 inches deep. Then, spreading brown pea gravel in that area to make a small parking area.

Is this material recommended or should I use something better?

Thanks for your answers!

This is the third year for my vines. I have left them alone over the last two winters (I am in Alberta). I have looked for information but I haven't been able to find any on pruning, growing, care of,etc.of grapes. I have three main vines and they are getting pretty big with lots of new vines. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you for any answers.

There were 6 viburnums planted alongside a garage wall in our house when we bought it 15 years ago. They were growing so big and taking over each other (3 staggered in front of 3) that we removed the front 3 several years ago. Now the three we kept look awful and worse by the week. We keep removing dead branches. They are pretty sparse and sickly looking now. Is there anything I can do that might turn things around? Or is it a matter of age of the bushes? Our ground is awful - clay that's practically like concrete over a period of time. We also got hit hard with cicadas this year; I don't know if that's done anything. Thanks for any suggestions.

It also has large oblong leaves, and is about 3 to 5 feet tall. I am wondering what this plant is, and if the berries are edible. It appears that something, possibly birds are eating these berries. Any thoughts??
