Thinking I would be helpful, I just went out to cut the lawn, using a Petrol Honda lawnmower (borrowed from my parnters parents!!) I pulled the chord and nothing happened a few times, so I put on the choke and then it started. I never turned the choke back off again, and I got a good bit of the lawn done and the mower just stopped dead. I emptied the grass bag (which was full as full could be!) and tried starting it again. Its like its locked or something, as the cord will only pull a few inshes then jams. Have I broken the mower?
Can someone please tell me how to get it started and also what that choke thing is for??
Thanks (PS I am blonde....!)

You have probably got grass clippings around the blade thus preventing movement. Tip the lawnmower upside down clear all the grass clippings away and turn the blade by hand to make sure it is free, once you have done this place lawnmower right way up and pull the cord gently, should now start.
The cord will NOT pull if the blade is jammed

It could be a jammed starter chord, but usually the starter chord doesn't get jammed. First I'd remove the spark plug wire and look underneath the mower to see if the blades are hung up or if anything is jammed or wrapped around the main shaft underneath.
You also should check to see the amount of oil in the mower. The oil level should be checked pretty much every time before you start the mower, especially if the mower has sat for a while.
The choke controls the amount of air that the engine gets when it is firing. Just like a fire an engine needs air to combust. Normally you only need to use the choke at the beginning when you first try starting it until the engine starts running smoothly. Once the engine starts running smoothly then you turn the choke slowly off. If you turn the choke off too fast you may notice your engine start sputtering and wanting to die when you first start it. Normally you need more choke if the mower has sat a good while without being started. The more recently the lawnmower has been used, the less choke you should need.
What I'm afraid of is that you may have overheated the engine and possibly locked the engine up. Leaving the choke on makes the engine run hotter. If you leave it on for too long the engine can overheat and possibly lock up. That may be why the starter chord isn't able to pull out.
If the engine truly has locked up, it may be cheaper to buy a new push mower than to have it fixed.
As far as the spark plug, you always want to remove the spark plug wire before working underneath the deck of a push lawnmower and removing clogs. The reason is because there is the slight possibility that if you turn the mower blade it could possibly start the engine and cause the blades to start spinning thereby chopping off your hands. So it's better to be on the safe side.

You've done 2 things, both of which are easy to fix. Open the choke - the flooded carburettor will sort itself out while you are dealing with the jammed started cord.
First of all, try pulling the cord gently but constantly - that often untangles it. If that doesn't work, you can take off the cover - but be careful the cord spool is spring loaded. You should then be able to rearrange the cord on the spool. Don't pull the cord with the cover off or things will go badly wrong.
When everything is back together, try starting it with the choke open. The choke cuts down the amount of air going into the carburettor. That makes the petrol burn more easily, but it produces less power. With a mower, it's usually easier to start with the choke closed, but then open it once the engine is running.

sometimes if the mower has not been used for a long time like over the winter the petrol seperates and will not fire when started. If this is the case get a can of new petrol and refill the tank.if it has locked up,try pushing the machine backwards and forwards afew times to free it.

Make sure the grass is not clogging the mower, or what about petrol? Leave it for a while have a cuppa and try again I'm sure it will work. Lawnmowers are like men can be awkward.

You say the chord (cord) will not move more than a couple of inches ? if the engine will not turn, you may have siezed it (overheated it) by running it with the choke on and it will need a trip to the shop, and a professional to work on it.
Have you checked the blades are not stuck against something ?
Hey... don't worry too much, I'm blonde too.... sometines.
Smile at any man, and he'll probably fix it for you while you make him coffee.

You choked it!! It's dead!
Choke just gives it a little more gas when you're trying to start it. You typically turn the choke off once it starts.

Make sure there's enough oil in it, i have to push the oil button three times before trying to pull the chord. Dont over do the oil though or you'l be in a cloud of white smoke like i was a few weeks ago!
