I'm going with Pokeberry.
The stems will be fleshy, with dark speckles on them. Leaves will be up to 5" long, pointed, maybe with a reddish tinge.
Berries borne in long panicles, green, ripening to blue/black.
The berries can be harmful and stain concrete. Seeds are contained in berry, so they are preparing to return next year. Try to dispose of the plant quickly, as it also suckers from the roots. Smaller plants spray with a general purpose herbicide, be sure to spray only weeds and undesirable plants as it can harm your garden plants. Pick up the berries when you can.
Preen (or another pre-emergent herbicide) the area in the spring (April) to help prevent seeds from germinating.
I hope that this helps

Look for a picture of what is called Nannyberry. I also live in Northern Michigan. Be careful about trying the berries. Birds can eat alot of things that are poisonous to us. This might be nannyberry, cannot tell without a picture. The nannyberry is a sweet viburnam. You might alos have maple leaved viburnum but your description of the leaves does not sound right.
Northern Michigan holly has red berries, that will not turn purple. The underside of the leat is whitish in color and the leaves are not oblong,
Pokeberry could also be what you have but the berries are dark purple and pokeberry tends to vine. If you break off a stem, there will be a milky substance exuded.
There i also a form of Baneberry that produces blue to purple berries but they are very distinct. The berries look like and are called "doll's eyes." All of the above are poisonous except Nannyberry.

Hello. I am a Certified Master Gardener. Horticulture
was my major in college. I have been employed in a
plant nursery, and I work with plants as a volunteer
at my local University Botanic Gardens.
What you describe may be a Mahonia or Holly.
Birds have a different digestive system than humans.
I would NOT recommend eating the berries, leaves or roots
because what HELPS the birds could HARM you.
I sincerely hope this helps.

Sounds like pokeberry. Does it have a single stalk that is reddish? Don't eat the berries, they are poisonous. Birds eat lots of berries that humans can't.

If they're in pots simply put them within the garage close to an indoor wall. The will probably be best. If they are on your flower beds do not worry about them. You can bring them in the apartment but they'll shrivel up a little with the dry air within the residence but they will come back when you put them out again. Simply do not forget if you happen to do carry them in do not water them an excessive amount of - might be a bit water as soon as a month.

Could be elderberry, which is edible, makes a nice homemade wine, and can be used as ink for writing.
