Garden & Landscape - October 2006

Recently moved into a new home and outside, at the side of the house, are a row of flowers. I believe them to be the Bird of Paradise with the red flower. Seems they were not taken care of and the leaves are dried out and some are laying across the walk way. I started to clean out a corner and cut some of the bad ones back to a stem...then I realized what if they dont grow back? Can you prune these back? How do you care for them?

There is a naughty squirrel in the neighbourhood who is ripping up my lawn to bury his food.
I have tried going out afterwards and removing the food, he comes back and digs up more lawn.
I have a cat repellent transmitter that lets of a loud screech to deter cats from destroying the garden, but it doesn't seem to work for the squirrel.
I'm in the u.k so i do not have access to guns or explosives before I get tons of killing suggestions.

Anyone got any humane ways to rid this naughty creature?

My mother received a large and beautiful Chinese Evergreen plant recently and she was talking about giving it away because she was afraid that she wouldn't take good care of it. I convinced her to let us keep it, but now I feel responsible to make sure that it gets the right care. What kind of water and light conditions do these plants need?

I am wanting to find plants that will be resilient yet hopefully ones that will bloom fragrantly for an outdoor garden bed. (Sun until about midday and then in the shade.)

Thanks for your help

There is a Japanese Maple tree that grows in the yard of an abandoned church across from our house. It's so beautful, and even moreso in the Fall, when its burgundy red leaves turn crimson! I'd like to know when is the best time to pick the the "helicopter" seeds-- or should I pick them up in the Fall after they've fallen off? When is the best time to plant them? How many should I plant together? How far from our house, and other trees, should I plant it? How long til it sprouts?
I'm looking for as much information as I can get about growing a Japanese Maple tree from seed. Thanks for any help you can give! :)

We have this section of our yard that is a hill slope, and it is horrible and ugly looking!! its all weedy and overgrown, and ugly. So, all summer we have been trying to get landscaping companies to do it, but none of them will stay the whole day!!!

This is because my mother litterally stands out on the deck watching them work and ordering them around the whole time. Like the entire time she will be standing there, or sitting in a lawn chair with lemmonade or something yelling at them and telling them what to do. They ALL quit before the end of the day, now there is no company who will ever come and fix the hill from hell!!Its like we are black listed.

I dont want to do it WHO CAN OMGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!
