Ooh My favorite location,,,I need some important facts, Where are you climate wise. Are you a plant person or do you kill with kindness, and neglect? Do you want a lot of green foliage or want a profusion of color? If you want to eat what you grow cherry tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers I have grown very successfully on my deck and give foilage as well as the produce. Herbs are great on decks you can harvest them and they send wounderful aroma's throughout the area. I'm so glad to see you take an interest. In Europe you see a lot of plants on teraces. Since your deck is small a few well placed pots may be better than something that takes up a lot of room so shoot for minature versions as miniture roses or Ming evergreens. You can't beat Inpacients for colors, size as well as tough little plant they can be all wilted and pop right back as long as it hasent been too long since they were watered and the east morning sun is perfect. Cactus or succlents my favorite for anywhere, almost No maintence they are interesting discourage anyone from messing with them and produce the most interesting flowers. There is a huge sellection to choose from . The tip of the Iceberg in suggestions.

Add a conical trellis and grow some kind of honeysuckle or confederate jasmine up, and some kind of ipomoena sweet potato down, and bright lights swiss chard for the medium heighth level. Hang a cascading basket variety of petunia from the top, or if your landlord will allow, from the overhang above. This uses full vertical space for your small pot, and if you get the right variety of honeysuckle or jasmine you get fragrance to cut the smell of urban smog, too.

In order to get all that to grow in a pot that size, you'll need to fertlize like mad and never forget to water. But it'll look GREAT.
