Roses need FULL sun...
As for orchids, I have heard that they are very tempermental & require VERY regulated temperatures, moisture, etc. I have never had one so I would suggest your going on line to find the type of orchids you have & their specific care needs.
The roses require some water, but do not do well in soil that is overly moist or constantly moist. For mine, I use liuid miracle grow twice a month in the summer only, I do not feed or water them in the fall, winter or spring. We get enough moisture for them. Also watch out for black spot & spray for aphids often. Check for mildew also. Roses are usually hardy, but it can depend on the climate & the soil also.....

Go to your local "Nursery" and purchase plant food for Roses and Orchids. Also, purchase feeding soil, which has special nutrients, just for these types of Flowers. If in dought of which brand is best, take the Florist a sample of your plants (such as a leaf or petal) or the box/container the plant bulbs came in. Don't forget to ask about bug repellants. There are many types of bugs, that love the smell of these flowers, and will eat the petals at night. (Happy Gardening!)

Theres a big difference between growing roses and growing orchids. Check your local library for books on both. Roses need to be fertilized everytime they bloom, mulched and watered. I've never grown orchids, but sounds like it would be great fun!!

Fertilize the roses, remove spent flowers to promote more flowers because otherwise energy goes into the rosehips and not the new buds, they also like deep watering. I do not know about growing orchids.

I know that orchids are VERY fussy plants and need lots of humidity. Fertilizer and the proper soil are also crucial. Try taking a class at your local nursery or garden center. Your local bookstore or library is also a great resource. Also try:

Make sure you are feeding your soil and not just your plants as well. This is very important to growing roses and actually all flowers, you can add "instant fertiliser" once or twice during the growing season; but the best bet is feeding the soil and you may not have to mix any fertiliser up!
