The rain butts are open at the top for easy access when watering. They get colonised by insects, notably gnats, which become a nuisance around the garden. Lids and covers have not been very successful. Is there a suitable organic sterilising agent which will contol the insects without harming the plants in the garden? The water is primarily used on fruit and vegetables.

I'd like it to be unique and beautiful, graceful, maybe a bit delicate but not a weeping willow. Something with a branching shape, not too vertical. I'd like it to let dappled light through, and be no more than 25 feet when mature. It can be deciduous. I live in Southern California in an old 1920's mediteranean but not spanish-style house. The garden faces south/east with not much shade. It is ecletic, with white wisteria behind a black magic colocasia, some david austin 'heritage' roses, white heliotrope, pink jasmine, purplish red abutilon, canterbury bells, oreganum 'kent beauty', coreopsis 'limerock passion'. Things like that. I love japanese maples and I plan to use them soon, but this tree needs to be more of a focal point, close to the entryway, and it will be there to greet whoever comes to the door. Is there a maple tree that will be right? Or something entirely different? I just planted a halesia snowdrop tree farther down the garden.

I have several burning bush shrubs that I planted last fall and a couple of them have already turned a burnt orange (not bright) color...why? Is it normal for them to start turning color in July, or would be lack or water, or something else? We live in zone 5.

I have heard that a good way to police a fruit orchard is to let pigs roam under the trees. They will eat the windfalls and fertilize as they go. I know pigs root around a lot, though. Would they be safe to use in an orchard of dwarf trees? Has anybody here done this?

We are growing small hime kasen hybrid watermelons in the backyard. For some reason when it is growing bigger, it burst. Why did it happen? I also notice we got tons of ants.

The leaves on the tips of the branches started to curl up. When you open them up, they are full of little white bugs (that resemble maggots- yuk) with black bugs in some. I bought Seven spray, but it doesn't seem to be killing them. More & more leaves are curling up. Help!

I'm looking to create a border around a large mulch bed I have in my yard. It extends from the street, along my driveway, past my garage and into the backyard...very big bed with beautiful plantings.
Thought boulders would look natural and unique. Where do I look? I'll probably need between 50 and 75 of them I'd say off the top of my head.

They are created by plant breeders to bloom beautifully in the spring, but I understand they don't produce fruit. So the flowers just shrivel up and that's it? Not even little, tiny fruit? That seems weird to me. If anyone has these trees, what have you seen?

I wasn't thinking when I planted my peppers and I mixed up my de arbol pepper seeds with my banana pepper seeds. I was just pickling the first batch of banana peppers when my fingertips(hangnails) started burning and I couldn't hardly breathe......it was a de arbol. HOW CAN I TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PLANTS?????

I turned up the watering on my squash plants to 10 minutes a day before leaving on vacation for two weeks. When I came back they all had a powdery looking mildew and the leaves were yellowing and one had died completely. I cut back the water to five minutes a day and there now seems to be some green healthy leaves growing. Would it help anything to prune off the leaves that are yellow and with the powdery mildew still on there? Any other recommendations at this point?

This is one I have had since before I started keeping the tags. The white flowers are just about to open, and they are on top of very strong stalks. Leaves are broadly ovate and they sit up strongly. I have a vague memory of the name being very plain, since it is not one of the newer sports.
