I have many bald spots and just had a new water line installed from meter to house. Do I need to do anything before laying the sod to make sure it takes?

I WOULD SCUFF THE SOIL , BY USING A RAKE, SO THAT THE ROOTS MAKE CONTACT AND EASY ACCESS TO SOIL. WATER DAILY

You need to even the ground out completely then water it well before lying the sod. Keep it well watered afterwards too and don't walk on it until it has a chance to settle in it's place

Dig up around the area and water it , lay sod and stay off it.

Water frequently until the roots take hold to your existing soil.
