We are growing small hime kasen hybrid watermelons in the backyard. For some reason when it is growing bigger, it burst. Why did it happen? I also notice we got tons of ants.

the soil got very dry. then the plant got a lot of water, through a big rain or watering. the inside of the watermelon took up water too fast, the rind could not grow fast enough to accept it. tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, and many other plants will do this. this is most likely what happened.

other possible causes---children or deer.

I believe the answers "too much water" is right. But I think back then, when we grew watermelons and some split, we picked them right away before they sat and rot, and still ate em (remove ants first ;)

Too much water, or too much hot sun. The sun heats them up, and they explode. Try covering them with leaves or cut grass to keep them cooler.

WATER, It got so much water, and plenty of sunshine it could not hold all the water. I watched all my Cantaloupes do that one year. POP,POP,POP, funny now, heart breaking back then!
