A very hard question since it all depends on the plants. Some plants are blight tolerant and will not get it. Others are not and it has a lot to do with the health of the plant and weather conditions. If scientists could figure it all out crops and ornamentals would do wonderful all the time. But a very good question indeed. All one can do is try to control the blight with fungicides and taking excellent care with food and watering each kind of plant.

There are different types of blight, and blight as a word is also used as it's root meaning-a speedy, wide-spread disease. Insects, viruses, bacteria, and fungus all have a preference for feeding or hosting on certain types of plants. It's nature's way to balance the food chain and we should be thankful there aren't blights that feast on EVERYTHING. Sudden Oak Death Syndrome plagued the US several years ago, but fortunately it only killed Oak. Could you imagine the devestation if it attacked Maples, Ash, and Lindens too?

My understanding of blight is that it's caused by fungus. Fungus needs certain conditions to prosper. Conditions like moisture and darkness. (think of mushrooms) If you had a lot of rain lately, and/or haven't cleaned out the dead growth on the plant and left it around the plant to decay? Get a good fungicide and spray the plant every 7 - 10 days, or after periods of rain. Check with you local garden center too.
