ok, i am conflicted. i found a beautiful 18x18 travertine tile at home depot at a great price ($2.41 per sq ft). i was planning on installing in the entry, hall, kitchen and dining room. after reading a bit, i am concerned about these scratches, stains, etc that people are writting about. how concerned should i be? if i drop a jar of pickles or a glass of water, will that cause damage? should they be sealed or not and if so, how often? should i skip travertine altogether? is regular marble a better choice? please help...i am so confused!

Currently renting an apt., but will be leaving after lease is up. There are surface scratches in the wooden floor boards. They are light in color (maybe pine?) with a clear finish. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the scratches so my rental company won't deduct money from my security deposit?

I have a 8x4' mirror and it is flaking off the sides. I need a stick-on type frame or border that will cover the flaked-off area on the edges. I think they come in strips that can be cut.

I'm trying to make a wooden box about the size of a shoebox to keep pictures, small figurines, etc., anything that will remind me of my memories. I want to use it as a keepsake box. Does anyone have any idea on how to make it? What items will I need? I'm also on a tight budget, so I dont have a lot to spare. Anyone have any idea on how to make a cheap one? Thanks!

Ive spent hours stripping and there is still lots of paint in the grooves. Im getting anxious to get this done and bored with the project...please help. I took a refinishing course once and we used a liquid the ate the paint off...anyone know what that would have been? You applied it with a steel wool pad and it worked great! THANX

i like the color of the wood when the stain is on, but after I wipe it off it is too light. It is like the wood is not accepting the stain very well, and i did sand it down before staining.

I'm thinking about repainting my walnut-colored cabinet doors and cabinets off white. My questions are:
1. Would this really increase the resale value of my home, or have I been watching too much HGTV?
2. Is it necessary to sand, or can I just prime and paint?

I have determined that water is coming in my basement (under my fireplace) when it rains because the bricks on the outside of the house (fireplace) have cracks/holes in the morter.I sprayed water on the bricks covering the fireplace (where the tops of some of the bricks are exposed because of the step-like pattern-where the structure goes from being wide to narrow as you get closer to the top of the chimney. That is definitely the source of the problem. What is the best way to seal that?

My homes carpet REALLY needs to be replaced, but I can not affort to do it right now. Occasionally I see people who buy new homes give away brand new carpet because they are putting in hard wood. Is it possible for someone who is not very handy to learn to lay carpet themselves? Have you? How would you rate its difficulty from 1 to 10?

I have an odd sized vanity top that needs to be repaced. I don't want to order a custom top because it costs too much. I would like to buy a single piece preformed vanity top (counter and bowl) from Lowes (see link below) and cut it to size. Most of these tops are made of cultured marble.

Is it possible? Has anyone done this? If so, how?
