i like the color of the wood when the stain is on, but after I wipe it off it is too light. It is like the wood is not accepting the stain very well, and i did sand it down before staining.

You might be happier with the effects of varnish stain, where the stain and varnish are premixed, and the finish is merely painted on with no wiping down. I have used this technique when I need a real solid stain, as opposed to the more translucent style that is typically used. Get a tiny amount and try it out. It may be just right. If not, I'll give you a complete refund on your cost for my answer!

Oil based stains take time to dry, sometimes weeks. Just leave it alone, and it will slowly dry. If you use a water based stain next time, drying time is faster. The way stains work is the liquid must evaporate, or harden, and it takes time for oil to dry out. In the heat of summer, things dry more quickly than during the winter. But humidity makes drying times take longer. Wait a month, then take a white, cotton cloth and gently rub a hidden area. If stain comes up, the wood probably just won't soak in anymore stain.

allow the stain to sit longer then wipe and re-apply after stain dries. next time try a pre stain conditioner if it is a soft wood this way the stain soaks in evenly and gives a uniform finish

It will eventually dry it might take a few days depending on how much pigment is in the stain
