I'll assume you're talking about prefinished wood strip flooring.Measure off the back wall the width of the flooring plus 5/8" (for expansion reasons) from the 2 corners of the wall. Strike a chaulk line and facenail the flooring with the edge behind the toungue on the line all of the the way down the wall. Then use your rented t&g flooring nailer to nail the rest to the starter. Remember, the trick is to not put too many joints in one area. Look over the floor as you go along to make sure you're properly spacing your random lengths. You don't need to find a center point with wood strip flooring. Just go off the back wall and work towards the door. You'll almost always have to cut down on a table saw the last strip run.

Measure from each corner and find the center of the room in both Directions, Chalk a line each way- then chalk another line half the width of the Floor piece- lay to that line, it will not only give a straight line but will make an even border against all walls.

Measure between walls in two places a good distance apart from each other. Hopefully the values are the same. Divide that value by 2 and that should be the center of the room for that direction. Strike a chalk line or mark with carpenters pencil and long straight edge. If you wish to know the center point of the room. repeat the process in the other direction. Where the two lines intersect would be the center point. Almost directly under the ceiling light fixture.

You need to get a "Chalk Marker" at a hardware store and after measuring where you want the starting row to begin you and an assistant lay down the marker which will mark the floor with a chalk line.

(They probably now have Laser devices that will put down a laser line that will do the same thing...ask about it)
