how to aquire a house in illinois

I have an 8 yr old stepson that lives with us sometimes. He has his own bedroom but is very plain and boring. I would love to decorate it in a cool way so he feels more at home there. We decided on cars for a theme. We live in an apartment so we can't paint the walls or hang too many things up. We are on a serious budget. Please give me some ideas that we can work with. Thank you!!

I have a room with a finished oak wide board floors, and exposed honey coloured brick on one wall. I have a light grey couch and a darker grey vanity. What colour would look best in the room? The lighting is quite good so I don't want to go too dark but rather emphasise the light.

I wanted to buy some cermaic tiles from this place and the lady said that if get my contractor to buy it, that they could sell it cheaper. I asked how much cheaper and she said it depends on what kind/type of contracting license they have. Is this true? do some contracting license get more discounts than others? if so what type gets the BEST discounts?

I'm trying to find an area rug for my living room, styled in what one might call casual modern (no florals or persians). The room has white walls (apartment), subdued goldish tan sofa and loveseat and burgundy leather accent chairs. Side tables and coffee table have a black finish, and wall art is predominantly black or dark brown with burgandy accents. Lots of plants, too, which introduce greens into the room. But there's a tannish wall-to-wall, and while the room has a dark, masculine feel, which I like overall, for some reason it's also a little monochromatic feeling. Perhaps it's my tendencies toward solid colors. So I'm looking now to brighten and punch things up a bit on the floor without getting too garish. I've found lots of rugs with colors and patterns I like, but I can't tell what would work best in that room. I'm hoping for something on the lighter side, I think, to make the blacks pop, but that will also harmonize with the golds and burgandies.

I am moving to New York on Feb. 2007, I have never lived in an apartment or small spaces. So I need ideas in how to arrange the furniture and decorate the space. Also are studios a very common living space in NYC?

Help- after 15 years of hail the ins.co has agreed to replace the vinyl siding and roof on my house. We have a modest sized home in and average sized neighborhood- do I shock my family into thinking the house has moved and go for a big change or do I keep it the same-or similar. And so many choices how do you pick you colors so they arent just trendy? We live in the midwest. I picked out the roof shingles but may want to change the siding color- the trim will stay white because the main pillars are white. The house is a faded pale blue grey with dark blue door and accents-What about a darker slate grey w/ a red door and pewter roof? Too yuppie? Too suburbia? Help me make some guided chioces? I'm changing the outer metals from shiny brass to etched pewter. Any words of wisdom? I do have the most beautiful red maple trees in my yard that radiate such beuatiflul colors in the fall I don't want to take away from the house or trees-I have 1 week to decide! House faces south.Thnx

I want to tile the wall behind my stove up to the ceiling. A hood is not in the budget yet but I want to fill the space in the meantime. Has anyone done this?

My boyfriend is redecorating his flat, we mask off the switches, plugs etc, windows, doors, and paint the walls, but then it comes to painting the skirting boards and ceilings, and we end up getting paint on the wet walls. We can't put masking tape on the walls (because it is wet), and we can't wait for it to dry as we only have a very limited time (weekends, and nights when we have the energy) and he wants to sell his flat ASAP.

So please help anyone who knows the painting and decorators' secrets!!!

We moved house in April and the decor in the lounge is really annoying me now. Basically it is a big room (sort of lounge/diner size) with a pinky purple carpet and matching curtains at the patio doors. The walls are a dark pinky purple wallpaper on the bottom half, have a cream dado(sp) rail, then have a light pinky purple wallpaper with darker flowers on the top half (plus a matching border above the dado rail as they seemed to be obsessed by borders!)

Although I like pinky purple it's all a bit much so I want to redecorate. We can't really afford to get a new carpet or curtains so need to do something with the walls to calm it down a bit. I was thinking of just magnolia but the there is also a cream fireplace and I'm not sure if that would look strange.

So I'm looking for some decorating suggestions/ideas

We are building a new house in the Denver, Colorado area and were wondering if there is a current trend in selecting the type of wood and stain for the kitchen and bathroom cabinets? Are most new houses going with cherry, maple, oak, or hickory for their cabinetry? And what color of stain is in now?
