Check the thrift shops in your area. They often have excellent buys. You can get very good frames there and replace the artwork, if you don't like it, with inexpensive posters or prints from stores like Michael's or museum stores. For a really professionally finished look, you can have Michael's (or another store that does framing) do the job for you, maybe adding a mat. Even though a little pricey, it's still way less expensive than shopping in a gallery.

Hobby Lobby, if there is one near you, is the cheapest place I have found quality stuff. They frequently have sales on all framed artwork; associates could probably tell you when the next one is. They have neat posters of old ads and really great black and whites. I found some Ansel Adams posters that look great in a $10 frame. Garden Ridge is cool, too...Kirkland's has some great metal wall art, more traditional stuff...none of these stores have online shopping, though.

I may sound horrible in saying this, but,,,,you either have the talent or don't when it comes to decorating (and that's not bad if you don't)...I wish the Internet weren't such a dangerous place because I would love to show you my mid 30's son's bachelor pad....he has bathing suit contest photo in 1930 in old black and white ...then he has real contemporary paintings (cheap!!)... then he hangs rugs, etc on the wall...even has a 14ft. python skin draping over the dining table as a runner....there is a giant poster framed in black of a old Tour DE France where the participants are smoking during the race ... has the brightest good print of the Leopard in the Tree (Only good print he owns) framed in metallic silver....painted two sets of book cases in black and had glass shelves put in the top two shelves of 6 ft. bookcases....old Kilim rugs from garage sales on the carpet...enough said....I am sure you are bored by now....just be yourself and go for whatever floats your boat.

The Dollar Store has framed everything! Mirrors, too. Jungle pictures, or big scenes with big frames. Start at $2.50 - maybe less. They also have lots of knick knacks and do-dads to set around your place. Plus odds and ends you would need like salt/pepper shakers, rugs, bedspreads, dishes. These stores are really great for setting up a little beginner's apartment! Have fun!

Buy the largest Canvas' you can afford. Form shapes with masking tape and other shapes. Pick out about 5 related colors. (go to a paint store and get chips) take your chips to the hobby section of Walmart or another department store and pick out acrylic paints to match. After you have made shapes on your canvas with tape. Apply the paint with different items in different sections, rags, sponges, brushes. steel wool, etc. You can make a striking painting using just one color of paint varying textures. If you are a non artist. Stick to several shades and values in a single family. Good luck.

U could try Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target. If u don't find anything u like get to the university bookstore and look at the posters. U can frame them yourself. Still don't find anything, get some of your favorite pic or take some and blow them up. Its not that expensive and u can purchase frames them from stores like Dollar Store, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby, Wal-Mart, CVS, and Wal-Greens.

Don't know where you are from, but here in Massachusetts,we have yard sales,or garage sales. Some places call them tag sales. There is usually some art work to be had at really cheap prices.Sometimes your local library will let you take out art work for a month at a time, and then return it for something else.

Do a search for starving artists--it's a group of locals who put on shows around town. Invite a talented buddy over to do a mural---Sears has murals that are kinda sweet too. They go on like wallpaper---had a Fiji sunset on my dorm room wall. You also might wanna try Cheaprikdecorators.com --lol

Not sure what is affordable for you but here's a few ideas:
art.com
eBay.com
garage / estate sales
Hobby Lobby
Poster.com - if you buy a print, which is a lot cheaper, you can always get it framed relatively inexpensive

If you have a favorite actor, golfer, favorite picture of your favorite view, fav pet. whatever....get that picture and have it blown up and then find a matting in Walmart and get a frame. My friend has pictures done in black in white of .James Dean and Dale Earnhardt then there is track lighting he has mounted to the ceiling and aiming right on them. Pretty cool.
