I'm trying to find an area rug for my living room, styled in what one might call casual modern (no florals or persians). The room has white walls (apartment), subdued goldish tan sofa and loveseat and burgundy leather accent chairs. Side tables and coffee table have a black finish, and wall art is predominantly black or dark brown with burgandy accents. Lots of plants, too, which introduce greens into the room. But there's a tannish wall-to-wall, and while the room has a dark, masculine feel, which I like overall, for some reason it's also a little monochromatic feeling. Perhaps it's my tendencies toward solid colors. So I'm looking now to brighten and punch things up a bit on the floor without getting too garish. I've found lots of rugs with colors and patterns I like, but I can't tell what would work best in that room. I'm hoping for something on the lighter side, I think, to make the blacks pop, but that will also harmonize with the golds and burgandies.

Try the burgundy color family like red. Not maybe such a light red but a rich red color. This will pop on the floor even if its a dark color. It will go with your black, gold and burgundy. U can also try the beige family. Not too light b/c u can have a few colors in this room already. U might also get a nice green pattern. Patterns are not just limited to florals could be stripes, squares, something that is not too much but goes with the entire room scheme. U might even find something with a little of all in a great pattern. If it doesn't work bring it back and start again.

OH MY GOSH - I have the perfect rugs! Well, I think so anyway. I just bought them and love them. You decorations sound so much like mine. This rug has greens, gold, burgandys(or very dark red?) in it. It's awesome.

Do you have a Kohl's store near by? If not check it out online. This rug is made by Laura Ashley and the rug name is Ahana. It's got blocks of floral (more like leafy...not like traditional floral rugs) designs which to me is somewhat modern but soft with all the right colors!

Check out the link below, and the picture really doesn't do it justice. Go check it out at the store if you can!

Many places that sell rugs will let you put several on a credit card and take them home to try them out in the space, keep the one you like best and return the rest. That's the only way to be really sure. I suggest you try a large pattern with burgandy, green and maybe some gold in it for a little punch.

I have basically the same colors and I have put a black and white area rug on the floor -mostly white with black accents.
