I have an 8 yr old stepson that lives with us sometimes. He has his own bedroom but is very plain and boring. I would love to decorate it in a cool way so he feels more at home there. We decided on cars for a theme. We live in an apartment so we can't paint the walls or hang too many things up. We are on a serious budget. Please give me some ideas that we can work with. Thank you!!

Get the basic color sheets, like red or blue. Then get a car comforter. It should have pillow shams for it. Use the basic color to coordinate with other pillows. As for the wall, u could use wallpaper boarders but use colored thumbtacks to put them up. U can staple but the thumbtacks will not look bad if u use the colors in the racing comforter. Get poster with racing on them. Go to Wal-Mart r even a university bookstore. Can't find anything look in magazines for a cool pic r his favorite racer and blow up and frame. He'll have a unique bedroom, U can also get material and cut into shape of car like blue, fill it a little with stuffing then put red numbers on it. Get black pieces make tires and use this for an entire wall or above bed, Just do a little at a time. Couple of months room complete and last a long time.

garage sales would be a good place to start. Maybe you could buy one of those car making kits at a hobby/toy store and the two of you can put it together and then place it on a shelf. Then there is always those vinyl wall decorations. What about finding a picture of an old car and putting it in a frame. You could always find some car "stuff" at a junk yard and clean it up and then put it on display. I always wanted to make a bed out of half a car for my boys but I don't know how, I thought that would be neat and "cool" for them.
Good Luck and have fun!!

Buy the comforter only and get cheap sheets and pillow cases that match one of the colors on the comforter (like blue or red). They have wall stickers that are easily removed or an adhesive border that is suitable for apartments (available at Walmart or Kmart). Try going to yard sales or thrift stores to purchase cheap furniture that you can repaint like a bookcase or desk or shelf for his knick knacks. Ask his mom to send over some of his trophies or pictures or projects he has done... you can also have him pick out posters and use double sided tape or putty to hang them on the wall so you don't make holes. Keep him involved he'd probably love decorating his own room. Ask him what he would like. Hope these helped and good luck.

If hes into cars you could get a bunch of posters of hot cars (bout 5 bucks each) like lamborginnis and vettes. Use poster tack stuff....you know that blue stuff so you don't have to put any holes in the wall. Get him a couple of model cars and some kind of funky accesory like a lamp that is a car or a big stuffed car. It'll all fall together
( you sound like a nice stepmom)

Since he is 8, go with a Nascar Dale Jr #8 theme. Check the fabric department at Walmart, they have printed fabrics that you can sew with minimal sewing skills for pillows or to hang on the wall.

My style is Pottery Barn. I get my ideas from their catalogs. A lot of the stuff in there, you can make yourself or buy cheaper somewhere else, like Target. But look in magazines...

wallpaper border, switch plate cover, rug, bedding, curtains and then after you show him the remade room, tell him to look in the closet, where you will have a RC car fully charged waiting for him.
