I was brought up always filling a water cooker or coffee maker with cold rather than hot tap water, and that there was a good reason. I was hard pressed to produce that reason recently, other than I think it has to do with damaging the appliance - but is that due to calk or throwing off the regulator? Or is this all just "something Mother always did"? Most people I know take this rule for granted...until now.

I've seen really nice town houses going for about $200,000, but I'm afraid to buy them cause I fear that we will have a hard time selling in the future when it's time to move on. Any suggestions as to what websites to look at or any good answers?

I have a pair of mesh shorts and they were washed and dried. When I took them out of the drier, there was gum caked (and very thinly so I don't think freezing would work) to the front.

Any suggestions on how to get it out?

I have a Brinks lock that someone else changed the combination on then forgot it, it's one of the ones that have a seperate dial for each number in the combination (IE if the combination was 1-2-3-4 you would set the first dial to 1, the second to 2, and so on). How can you find the combination to these? Or does anyone know of any demonstration videos?

Vinegar
Cleaning methods used by consumers reduce the life of wood floors. In fact, many people clean their wood floors with water and vinegar. These elements prematurely alter the luster of the finish and cause the appearance of black stains on the planks because water can infiltrate planks and blacken the wood. Vinegar is an oxidant and alters the varnish. The only way to remedy these alterations is to sand the floor and varnish it again.

We have had this bed for over 20 years. When we moved we traded sides of the bed and I am now over the heater. We did have to get a new mattress when we moved and it not quite as high a quality as our old one but it is only like a step below. Due to certain circumstances changing sides is not an option right now. I just wondered if this has ever happened to anybody else.

I am having a tough time deciding on what color of window treatments to go with in our family room. The walls are painted a golden yellow and our furniture is a chocolate brown sectional with a brown recliner and an accent chair that is multi-colored taupe, yellow, red, and brown. It is faint since the stripes are very small. It is an awesome family room. We also have hardwoods. Please help with what color window treatments would look best. We have a large bay window with a doorwall and three other large windows. Thanks!

I have a Honeywell F300A Electronic Air Cleaner attached to the forced air intake at my home. When the unit is in operation I hear a popping sound which I always took to mean that it was simply the sound of the incoming forced air being cleaned.

Lately however the popping sounds started to get more frequent. So I cleaned the cells on the air cleaner in my dishwasher and vacuumed the pre-filters clean. But this does not really seem to have helped any, i.e. I am still hearing the constant popping while the air cleaner is in operation.

Is this normal? Or is this something I should be taking care of? If its the latter then what could the problem be?

I recently bought a lighter with a nice faux-antique silver plate finish, but when I had it engraved the moron polished the damn finish off. I would like to restore it, or even take it a step further (I'm quite fond of the dirty look - I just don't want to take the silver plate off).

These are things I've tried, so do not mention them:
Saltwater
Vineagar/Lemon Juice

I had a mercury vapor light in my yard for many years. A couple of months ago I replaced it with a high pressure sodium dusk to dawn lamp. I cannot seem to find a metal halide dusk to dawn lamp. Do they even make these? Is there a way to convert a HPS lamp to a MH lamp. Or a MV to a MH lamp. I like Metal Halides because they are more energy efficient and bright.
