Remove what you have done! Wirenut the two white wires together then put one black wire on one switch terminal and the other black wire on the other switch terminal.

One of the black wires is the hot wire. The other black wire goes to the fan.

The white wires are the neutral or return wires. When you splice them together, it completes the neutral circuit from the fan back to the breaker box.

The switch, when turned on, connects the two black wires so the electricity goes thru the switch, up to the fan. thru the fan motor and back down the white wire to the panel, completing the circuit.

I hope this helps.

hook the 2 whites together, that lets neutral through to the light, the switch breaks the black wires, one on top the other on the bottom, bare wire or green (ground)to the green screw on the switch.

White, (return), wires don't go to switches.
Black, (power), in one side of the switch.
Black from the other side of the switch to the fan.
White from the white in the switchbox to the
other terminal of the fan.

When you flip the switch you are creating a direct short. Wire nut your common back together (white) Run one side of of your hot (black) into one of the side poles and the other end to the other pole. Do not forget to turn off your breaker while working on the switch.

just splice the black wire and only hook that up to the switch, one on each end.
