My wife and I just bought a 40 year old house with a fireplace. The fireplace was just swept professionally before we moved in. I lit a fire the other day. For the first hour, it was great. Afterward when I added another log, smoke started billowing out and into my living room. The flue was open as was the damper. I also heated the inside of the chimney before I lit the fire. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why the smoke is coming into the house?

I have a 7yr. old Hoover washer/drier which has just started to make an awful racket on the spin cycle, it sound like boots are inside the machine. It was moved recently when a plumber was connecting mains through to bathroom. Can anyone advise me what to do to rectify. Money short due to Christmas so don't want to call in anyone to help.

I changed every light in my house to energy star flourescent bulb lighting. However that was back in Oct and my light bill is STILL the same and there has been no change.I work so we're not home that much during the day and not many (maybe two) lights are kept on during the day.Yes I did replace all the bulbs with the newer lights however as claims have been made about more cost effective I am not seeing any reduction in light bills. In fact at this rate I may as well go back to the regular light bulbs. And no my house is not old it should be reflective of engery efficent .Any idea's ?

Is it better to do one room at a time, or see something, put it where it goes, back & forth from room to room--if one room at a time, how do you do that if there's so much stuff that goes in nother room without getting the other room all messed up, and you don't have an empty room to store things in during the meantime?

I've rescued a Camelia that was subject to negligence for almost a year since its owner passed away. It should be a few good years old and it is not small-sized.

When I brought it home, around September, it was already all dry because of high temperatures and too much exposure to the sun. What made me think it is still alive is that when scratching the trunk, near the roots, it is light green.

What I did next was prune it heavily and tried to follow usual instructions for good care of camelias. I read that usually camelias begin growing new leaves in December/January, but I have seen no life at all so far. Most branches are dry and I'm not sure if I should prune it down until some green shows up in the branches.

What can I do to recover this camelia? Thanks.

Thanks.
