This is going to be very tricky. If the texture you are talking about is the "popcorn" type, then just scrape off all the old popcorn & start fresh. You'll get a much better looking job.
If it is a knock-down or orange peel type, they make cans of spray texture that match the various types of texture that are out there. You'll have to go the home center (usually in the paint dept.) and explain to them what type you have.
Be patient, finishing drywall is sometimes an artform, it takes the pros a long time to fine tune their skill.

I'm going to agree with Roadrunner, other than, I'd remove the texture, and smooth the entire ceiling.
Certainly Popcorn, should have been outlawed years ago, in my opinion. It's a nasty substance to maintain. I'm not in favor of texuring anyway in a general sense because of the scenarios in having it, especially on a ceiling.
If you must have texture, I'd strip the existing, and re-do the entire ceiling.

It will be difficult to make any texture you apply seamlessly match the texture that is already there. It would be easier to sand off the texture and then repaint the whole ceiling with a textured paint.

use some spackling compound and apply with a tool that resembles the texture like a sponge or a roller. Then simply paint the whole ceiling to match.

Using spackle, you spread it over the smooth part and using a brush or trowel or stick (depending on the texture) you apply the spackle to match.
You may have to repaint the whole ceiling after the spackle dries.

My ceilings are textured with that spray that has many little pieces of dryway in it mixed with paint. All you would have to do is spray the smooth side.
