One room at a time ... start on one side and go to the other. If something needs to be moved into another room either put it in a bag or in a pile so you don't have to keep running back and forth. Makes you less tired that way.
The best thing to do is get containers or bags whatever to put every item that does not belong in that room in, like one for stuff to go in the kitchen, trash, misc., give away, bedroom, this child, that persons ... and so forth. Once you are finished take the containers to the following room, clean it THEN sort out the container with stuff for that room and continue on ...
Get rid of stuff you will never use IMMEDIATELY do not think about it just chuck it in the trash, yardsale, or to goodwill otherwise you'll never get rid of it

When my house is a wreck. I start with the bedrooms. Pick up all of the dirty laundry and put it in the hamper in the bathroom. Take dishes to the kitchen, and put trash in the trash. Put anything that doesn't belong in that room into the room that it does belong in. I then do the bathrooms, taking the laundry down to the laundry room. I continue through the house from room to room. Leaving the kitchen and laundry room for last. The rule is that you find an item in a dirty room that belongs in a room that has already been clean then you put it away in that room, not just dump it. If you have several family members or a large house then putting stuff into bins for each room might be better, and then carry the entire bin to that room and put it away.

If I'm picking up clutter, I'll clean one room at a time. But when I vacuum, I run the vacuum through the entire house without stopping.
One thing to remember about taking things to other rooms is not to just drop it off in the room where it belongs, but actually putting it away! If it doesn't have a home, then you will just have another messy room. Take some time to make sure whatever you are putting away has a place.

Just be practical.
If the whole house is a mess, and you start trying to attack the whole mess all at once, you can work a long time and still have little to show for it.
If, instead, you pick up and organize the living room, then the kitchen, then a bathroom, for example, you can feel like progress is being made right away.
Also, if you get called away from the project, wouldn't you feel better knowing that a few rooms are clean, rather than dreading that "all of it" still needs work?

carry a basket with you and clean one room at a time. Put items for another room in the basket. Put them away when you reach that room. You can always go through the 1st room and get all the stuff out that doesn't belong in there then move to the 2nd.

I've found it best to do one room at a time starting with dusting and finishing with vacuuming/mopping [working from top to bottom of room]. This is more effective than trying to do whole house cleaning. As far as moving clutter, use a few large baskets [laundry or similar] to sort and transport clutter to its proper place. And remember that it takes less time to put things in their "proper place" than to put it in the wrong place and have it properly place it later.Try cleaning up as messes are made, as keeping your home clean and clutter free saves time in the long run. And makes you feel better too.

in my opinion, i think it would be better to clean the rooms one at a time because you can get to get use to where the items go more clearly and positively.
about your last question. uhh, you can put all the items that you don't know where to in a separate empty box and place it in your attic or your garage [if you live in a house]. or maybe you can put it in a nearby friend's house [if you trust him/her that is] for he short period of time.
well, hope it helps. [but i doubt it is] :P

i guess that you have a lots of stuff, and don't know where to start.
1).Throw or donate the stuff that you didn't use for years.
2).Recycle things so you don't keep buying new stuff that over cluttered your room.
3).Be able to organize your furniture so that its dosent stop you in cleaning up your room.
Make an effort to cleaning up your home everyday.
