So, I had originally decided to start my boyfriend on a nice toolset. Now, i've delved a bit deeper only to discover that what he is actually interested in is woodworking. He wants to be able to build, and put fancy details on, things like tables, chairs, shelves... the like. We both live in apartments until we're married, and neither of us have a garage or anything, so my set for him needs to start small. What is a great first tool or several tools that every woodworker should have? What will prove to be the most useful, and what should I avoid? I've already got a gift for him for Christmas this year, but our anniversary is coming up, as is valentines day, as is his birthday... so many ideas would be great! Please tell me specifically what to look for, how much it should cost, what the best/worst brand is, and where i can go to get it (i'm in michigan... we have home depot, lowes... and...i think thats it). thanks guys!

My town received heavy rainfall and minor flooding last week. We have been under a boil water advisory for a week. It seems mostly precautionary. I have dipped into my emergency supply of bottled water for drinking. But what about washing dishes? Any tips? Would you wash with hot water from the tap? If not tips on how to boil water and get an optimal temperature to wash?

I have some screws that I need to shorten by a 1/4 inch, what tool can I use to do this and still be able to screw them into a door knocker? Is there anything that will make a clean cut, to where the threading on the screw will not be comprimised?

I'm like a walking lightning rod!!

With the weather cold and very dry at the moment, everything I touch gives me a zap -- sometimes a teeny weeny zap to an all-round electrical charge, that I can feel vibrate! Like when I accidentally touched the prong on the Christmas lights cord!!!

Sometimes I've even seen a gigantic flash! :/

Someone suggested getting a magnetic bracelet when I commented on how I could feel the static coming off WALLS, even, and other furniture, when standing several inches away!

Certainly I have a few clothing items made from synthetic fabrics (and I DO use fabric softener/anti-statics), and I'm not about to rush out an buy a wardrobe of exclusively natural fibres.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What other types of saws should I look at?

I am a single mom and my parents never taught me these things. So now I am teaching myself as I am making a playhouse for the kids. What kind of saw is the best for cutting up wood to the proper measurement?

Ok, so my room mate broke a dish in the dishwasher as he was loading it, and after he took out the big pieces, he ran it. The thing stopped about 3 minutes in and started making this grinding noise and the water isn't draining. I assume some glass got caught down there, but it's this half size dishwasher from GE and I'm not really sure about what goes where in the dishwasher. How can I fix this myself? It keeps making the grinding noise and not draining every time I try to run it, even after I cleaned out some more glass. I don't want to pay for a repairman.

Without turning off the breaker how do I test which plugs are on the same circuit? I have a small room in a house with 5 plugs. The breakers are in someone else's unit so I don't want to bug them for an afternoon of testing running up and down flipping the breakers and seeing what goes off. Is there anyway to test what is on the same circuit??
I don't want to run the heater, kettle and toaster all on the same circuit because it will blow...
Also some light and plugs in the other unit might be on the same breaker. The house is rewired and I know there are at least 30 breakers in the box but this unit was an old dining room and new(I think) bathroom in the corner of the main floor.
