You can use a serger for most things except:
-- zippers (well, you can use it for zippers, but the result is clunky, imo)
--buttonholes
--topstitching (most sergers)

They are wonderful for ordinary construction seams, rolled hems, and some decorative effects like lettucing. They make short work of ruffles and gathers. And they're very fast compared to the usual sewing machine.

1. to sew stretch fabric
2. to make finished seam edges or rolled edges, and shear off extra seam allowance
3. to make a strong, stretchable seam

Yes you can use a serger in most cases in place of a regular sewing machine.
