I have some screws that I need to shorten by a 1/4 inch, what tool can I use to do this and still be able to screw them into a door knocker? Is there anything that will make a clean cut, to where the threading on the screw will not be comprimised?

I dont know about wood screws but electrical some wire cutters that you cut the romex off of wire have little holes in them that you can screw the screw into the right depth and sheer them off

I've done this type of thing before.
1. Cut it with a saw armed with a metal cutting blade and "rethread" the screw by cutting the slots along the thread.
It worked for wood screws and about 50/50 on the metal ones.
2. Just screw it in and afterwards just cut it then sand it down.

First. Start the screws into their intended holes but not too deep.
Second. back the screws back out then use either a grinder or belt sander while you hold the screw with a pliers or Vise Grip.
Last step. replace and tighten the screws in as deep as it takes to hold your Knocker.

No problem friend, all you need is a pair of Klines, also called Line mans pliers. I have a set of my own and have had to cut screws with it to make them shorter. All you need to remember it to cut with the thread and not against it.

Anything you use will deform the screw threads
somewhat. Use a hacksaw, dikes, boltcutter,
whatever you have, but cut the screw about
1 thread too long, and then remove the deformed
threads with a file.
