my room is located on the 2nd storey of our house and is a constant source of grief. it is so hot up there (despite opened windows and fan) that i often cant sleep or am woken up at ungodly hours of the morning sweating. the walls are white, and i have timber blinds across the window to no avail. how can i make my room less of a fernace?

well perhaps better insulation may help you out. In addition to keeping the heat or cold out, insulation can keep steady temps in a room too. If your fan isnt cutting it I would suggest the addition of a small portable air conditioner.
Good luck, I hope I helped.

A window air-conditioner. Check cubic dimensions of your area that is enclosed to be cooled and buy the capacity that matches your area the closest. Interestingly, in the Southwest where the humidity is virtually nil, the walls of the air conditioners are loosely packed with straw-like material over which water is trickled and, due to evaporation, an enclosed fan blows cooled air into the room; entire houses are air-conditioned in this manner at considerable savings compared to compressor-type air conditioners.

Plug in your fan and turn it towards you. Purchase a commercial bag of ice cubes. Empty the entire bag into a wide, shallow container (to contain the water as the ice melts) such as a roasting pan. Place the container of ice right in front of the fan (between the fan and you), at the level of the top of the bed. The ice-cooled air will be noticeably cooler than the room air for the amount of time it takes for the ice to melt -- which is as long as it should take for you to fall asleep!

Install a window unit air conditioner. Won't be more than a couple hundred dollars and will be money well spent.

Where is the fan? If it's a freestanding fan, aim it directly at your bed so the air is circulating over you.
