I'm a new homeowner and I also drive semi truck. I am gone five days out of the week, so economically it is more efficient for me to leave my heat off and I also turn off my hot water heater when I leave for the week. I live in mid-Michigan, and it's starting to get pretty cold out now. Just wondering at what outdoor temperature I should start leaving my heat set at 50F so that my pipes don't freeze? Also, should I be leaving my hot water heater running during the week in the winter? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I came home yesterday and there was a horrible sewer smell in the garage, clearly emanating from the drain in the middle of it. I removed the cover and the water was clearly filthy and stagnant.

It rained the night before but I'm not sure if that has an impact (it has been raining for on and off a couple of days actually but nothing really dramatic).

Anyway, I opened the garage door and ran the hose down the drain to see if I could force the dirty water out of the one-way valve but the smell only got worse. It disappeared after a while but I think it's mostly because the door was open.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could have been?

today the apartment above me had a small fire on the stove. It caused the sprinkler system in their apartment to go off until the fire department cme and shut off the water. The water came in my apartment like it was raining. It destoyed my bed to wher you could ring out the water and all clothes in the closet in the bed room and living room. My couch and love seat also got wet along with the carpet and paint damage to the walls. I do not know if water fo in the tv but I took pictures of where the tv sits and video of the water comming down the wall just in case it decided to go out soon. Who is responsible for my damaged things the building or the tenates above me and what do I do if they do not replace my beds. This is upsetting me because the room destroyed is my girls room and their bed is now GONE so they are sleeping in my room and I took the love seat that did not ger wet.

It's sheetrock 45 a chemically setting drywall compound.

No idea what the temperature is in my basement but its pretty chilly right now. Maybe 50-60F?

Also will it stick to paint if I sand the paint first to rough it up?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but we just moved to California from Maryland and there's a small Japanese maple tree in the front yard. It was pretty and healthy when we got here last month, but now all the leaves have fallen off and it looks kind of sick. Is this just because it's autumn, or could there be something wrong with it?

I have a mini tea rose plant in a pot on my apartment balcony. It did pretty well this summer, but I am wondering what I need to do for the winter. Do I cut it back? If so, how far back? Do I need to cover it?
Some advice would be wonderful.
Thank you

Hi everyone! I need to cut 1 inch by 1 inch black porcelain tiles in half. It is impossible because they are so small! I’ve tried a regular tile cutter and a wet saw both make the tiles go flying. It is impossible to hold them down because they are so small. I know the job can be done with a tile nippers but that takes a great deal of time. Is there any other way to cut it? I’m tempted to try a glass cutter to score it but I’m not sure if that would work. Ideas anyone? Thanks!

i need to update my kitchen and bath. i've never dealt with a general contractor before. so i was wondering....do contractor's usually get discounts for supplies they buy at a place like home depot. if so, do they pass on the discount to their customers.? or do they turn around and charge the client the retail price and make a profit on the supplies?
