There are a few types, Chalk or limestone powder and boiled linseed oil, typically 15g oil to 100g of powder mixed, that's all it is. Other types are synthetic which are usually silicone based. The properties are to be able to stick to glass and the window frame and at the same time be flexible enough to be moulded into shape, and also none toxic. The finish should be smooth and repels water.

the putty you are referring to is called glazing. after you put in the points, you cover them up with a beveled layer of putty. it is to water proof the window.

the putty that we use is made of a clay substance and to keep it waterproof it is mixed with linseed oil p.s magpies find the putty very tasty
