I have a small baseboard heater in many different rooms. I set the thermostat for the natural gas furnace at 65 and use the electric heat to warm the room that I'm in. Turning the electric heat off when I leave the room. Saves money by not over heating the rooms not in use.

Number one makes some valid points.

In large part it depends on your location; and utilities offered.

Electric powered ANYTHING is the most expensive method; but that utility, as number one states; might be powered by petrloeum products?

Some comparative research in your location might get you better answers. I'm not at all a "FAN" ( no pun intended) of baseboard heating; but I realize it might be an option.

You say you have an Oil burner/furnace. What is the appliance method for delivering heat currently? Steam/radiators? AHHHH OK...??? Your oil fired is also fan forcing hot air??? You're using two utilities to create heat???How might you convert an oil fired system to a forced air simply by using the oil fired if it isn't set up for Forced air?

The Electric Company provides power to the Grid through the use of Water, Gas, Oil or Coal. Gas and Oil fuel cost are added to your bill each month with the service charge. Water is the cheapest to genenerate electrical energy but they charge about the same because they know that the market will tolerate it. Coal cost more money to mine and ship than any of the major energy sources. What you pay for power generated by Coal is depenent upon such variables. Wind does not compete, in fact the units that provide Wind generated power are more expensive to buy, erect and maintain than any of the other sources. Solar power does no better. Base board heat stinks and it is very dry. You need moisture in the air to hold heat more efficiently. Gas powered Power Plants uses Boilers to power turbines. Gas has a diminishing return factor in that the price is inflated due to the fact that Gas reources are diminishing faster than any other source which demand more exploritory drilling at cost far out pacing the competing sources. For home heating my nieghbors are using wood burners. It is cheaper than Electric; but you still need to run an electric blower.
