i need to update my kitchen and bath. i've never dealt with a general contractor before. so i was wondering....do contractor's usually get discounts for supplies they buy at a place like home depot. if so, do they pass on the discount to their customers.? or do they turn around and charge the client the retail price and make a profit on the supplies?

this depend on alot of differant things, some contractors charge an installation fee and they give the materials at cost. most applainces and some fixtures have got a mark up but if you do some homework you should be able to find out what the wholesale price is and be able to negociate prices. some costs are fixed from the distributor as part by company representation do to warrenty. then there is the material costs that come with construction. most of the time these are not idimized and are hidden.you pay for 100 feet of wire when in fact they use 10 feet and then use extra at the next job site and then they are charged for the 100 feet too

My boyfriend has been in construction for over 4 years now. Most of the time they do get a discount! They usually do not pass on the discount to their customers. Some might just depends on the relationship with the customer. But the bottom line is they are out to make good money and thats how they do it. They try to make a profit on everything. Sorry:(

We generally mark up everything. If we have a deal with a supplier and I can get an oven for 500, when the retail price is 650, then I would charge my customer the 650.

I do, after all, have to research the purchase, find the retailer, order the item, pay for the item, handle the paperwork for that transaction, pick up the item, deliver it to the job site, and install that item. Then, after the job is done and your stove quits working, I have to warrant that item and arrange for its repair or replacement.

All of this costs me money and yes, you have to pay for that service.

And, we contractors don't get much of a discount at the big box stores like Home Depot. Most of my big ticket purchases are at online retailers and local specialty shops where I can build a relationship with the owners and salespeople. That relationship is built to make it easier for me to offer good, competitive service to my customers.

I've been a contractor for six years and spend over a 100 grand at home depot every year. They have never given me a discount. However i collect a lot of 10% off coupons.

as far as I know home depot doesn't do discounts for contractors...but some stores do...or contractor gets percentage at some stores (end of year)
but no matter what they pay you will be paying a mark up...keeping in mind you are paying for their time, their tools, their knowledge,
it is a service industry...there is a reason you are calling them to do the work...every time you call them you are tapping into what they are making a living doing but you wouldn't pay for that time would you?...so like any service industy the costs are relocated into what they can charge for...

Of course the builder will add to the price of the goods. He's making a living, just like the newsagent who sells you baked beans, he doesnt work for nothing. Cost maybe incurred in transportation of goods or extra labour required for moving the thing. It is acceptable to buy your own kitchen units, bathroom suite, shower so on, if you are afraid of being ripped off.
