Lydia,
The short answer is "YES"... I live in NorCal and 1 of 2 of my Japanese Maples have lost all their leaves... The 2nd is on its way... No worries, they will start re-growing their leaves around March-April when the weather starts getting warmer...
Oh, if you want to "shape" them, January-February will be fine...
Hope this helps...!

RE:
Do Japanese maple trees lose their leaves in the fall in California?
Maybe this is a stupid question, but we just moved to California from Maryland and there's a small Japanese maple tree in the front yard. It was pretty and healthy when we got here last month, but now all the leaves have fallen off and it looks kind of sick. Is this just because it's...

Usually Japanese Maples do not lose their leaves until November. I think something is wrong with it. Scrape off a piece of bark with your fingernail and look for green just under the bark. If you do, that means it is not too late to save it; get an expert to look at it and recommend a treatment. Even though it is early, it is actually a good sign for a sick tree to lose its leaves. You are really in trouble when the leaves die but do not fall off.
But get help for it as soon as possible. A mature Japanese Maple is very valuable.

A deciduous tree is going to lose its leaves no matter where that tree is planted. Japanese Maples are deciduous and, therefore, should be expected to lose their leaves. The time frame for the fall abscission of leaves (dropping of leaves) is based on the combination of sunlight duration and weather. This may or may not be the proper time in California, but it should be very close. Close enough that I would not worry too much. If you want the right answer for your area, call the University Extension service & they should be able to tell you what is normal in your specific area.
