The cabinets are oak and are a honey color with a lot of wood grain. I'd like to paint them a dark brown color, but don't know if this would look okay. I've searched and searched - cannot find pics of any dark brown painted cabinets...only white, black, red and green. Your thoughts??

Right now we have a large, heavy mirror blocking the fireplace so the air doesn't escape. Our landlord shoving newspaper up the fireplace to prevent the airflow, but this sounds like a fire hazard to me. I don't want to pay money for a damper for a home that we don't own, but I don't want cold air getting into the house, either. Is a fireplace useable without a damper?

We are buying a house and it is a tri level, so the bottom floor is half way under ground and has two bedrooms, both of the floors slant slightly toward the outside wall. We have heard to "thincoat" the basement floor by pouring in concrete until it levels. I was wondering if anyone can explain this process or tell me where to find out how to do it. Also I was wondering the approximate cost and if a random person with no experience could make this work. The floor wouldn't need to look finished b/c we are putting laminate flooring on top. We have heard that mudjacking is another option, so if anyone has any advice between the two or knows the cost difference, we would appreiciate any help. Thanks!!

We have two dogs that seem to shed constantly and our house is older and just seems to breed dust. I always seem to be cleaning but the next day it all looks the same. Aside from shaving my dogs or getting rid of them, neither of which I will consider as an option, does anyone have any suggestions on how to 1) keep my floors clear of pet hair, or an easier way to pick it up at least, and 2) reduce the dust in my house? We do use special furnace filters that are supposed to reduce dust in our house but I've noticed little improvement. Help?

Thanks!

I've recently acquired one of these for the first time. To start with I think I had more flies in the house than I had before!!lol

But I have just noticed that it is working and it is now full of dead flies. Am I supposed to empty them or do they decompose into the plant/soil?

I have one tree and 2 bushes (the bushes are Montgomery Blue spruces and the tree is a Fat Albert). On the two bushes there are full branches that have lost all of their needes (~2-3 branches per bush). The needles on the tree (Fat Albert) are turning yellow at the tips, and some are falling off. These are all new plants from this spring. I live in Chicago, and the climate has been a bit unseasonably dry and warm. I am looking for input as to whether or not this is normal, what are some thoughts as to what can be going on, nd if there are any remedies that can be applied. I appreciate your thoughts in advance.

Yes, I do realize that no lightweight vacuum will compare with a full-size. I'm looking for a light vacuum, with reasonably good suction for quick, every day or two vacuuming of the main living areas. I have hard floors, with a couple of wool pile area rugs. I'll still use a full-size vacuum for the weekly cleaning. Suggestions?

I need to raise my floral centerpieces off the table about 2 or 3 inches. Does anyone know of an inexpensive pedastal type block that will help me do this? It needs to be clear or glass, so it doesn't take away from the flowers. I need help! I'm stumped!

I feel stupid asking such a question but, I've never used one. I've always done it by hand. I know you slide the lever over and you hit the "self clean" button. So when it's done....what do I do after that?
