I feel stupid asking such a question but, I've never used one. I've always done it by hand. I know you slide the lever over and you hit the "self clean" button. So when it's done....what do I do after that?

Depends on the model and age, but generally you do nothing.

That's the beauty of it. The oven cranks up to about 700 degrees which vaporizes all the dirt and residue splatters from normal cooking. If the oven is very dirty, there may be a slight residue remaining that you have to wipe up.

The price you pay is the cost of energy to get and keep the temperature that high.

It really is best to do it in the Fall or Spring when you can have the windows open. Mine really kicks out a lot of smoke and I can't bear to run it when I can't have the windows open!

Anyhoo, yes, just slide the lever to lock, then hit the CLEAN button. Mine takes about 3.5 hours to clean sufficiently, then after its cooled (I usually like to wait an extra hour) wipe out the ash with a damp paper towel.

That's pretty much all you have to do. And, I did tell you that it will get smoky and fumey, right? Don't run the cycle if you have small children or sensitive pets around. I've heard accounts that the fumes will kill pet birds.

Good luck!

What do you do after that? You wait till it cools, then wipe the ash that is left out of the oven. That's it.

The self clean option works by heating the oven up to 900-1000 degrees. This burns all food particles to ash. It doesn't actually clean the oven. The oven must be wiped free of ash when the cycle is done and the oven has cooled.

Self cleaning does not really self clean. It just reaches a really high temperature to make all the grease and stuff like crusty so you can scrape it off easier.

So basically, you wait for your self-cleaning cycle to turn off, turn, with caution, scrap off anything. Comes off pretty quickly.
