Does it really make a difference when you wash in cold or hot water? I know hot water makes things shrink, so i mainly stick to cold water, but is there anything i SHOULDNT wash in cold water? Or is there a reason i should? And also, i know to seperate darks and lights, but does it really make a difference if its already been washed (the bleeding)?

Hey all,

My central air stopped working completely this evening (its less than a year old). My thermostat went completely blank (it is not battery operated). I checked the fuse box and they weren't tripped. I checked the box (circuit box I think) by the AC unit and it didn't have any fuses. I cant even get the fan to turn on in my house.

If I throw batteries into my thermostat then the thermostat will "act" like it is turning on by showing me a green light. When I go outside however, the unit is doing nothing.

What on earth could cause this. I need to fix this because it will be 98 tomorrow and I dont feel like frying!!!! Thanks

Some of my friends say it is cozy and warm. Some say paint it and brighten it up. It is not the traditional paneling with the grooves. It is a solid wood look, it think it is called library paneling. HELP!

I have three roommates (for a total of 4 of us). We don't use the dishwasher b/c our water bill is already pretty high. Instead, we all just wash whatever dishes we use at the end of the day.

Sometimes, we'll skip a day and it takes like 15-20 minutes to do half a sink of dishes.

Just wondering if it's cheaper for us to wash a dozen or so dishes everyday (and like one sink full per week), or if we should just use the dishwasher 2-3 times a week.

If it helps, the dishwasher is full-size. The brand is a GE, Triton XL (Eterna series). And it has the Energy Star sticker. :)

Thanks.

im considering planting one in our front yard to provide some shade in the summer.....in sacramento the summers are brutal, and shade is an energy saver.

wondering if the tree is messy, what shape it has, susceptible to any diseases or bugs.....general stuff..

My sister and I were discussing flowers..lol...... but neway, we cant seem to figure out the name of a flower. It has a long stem (not calla lilly) and the petals are long and droop over.. (not a lot of bunched up petals just a few long ones) I've usually seen them in white but Im sure they come in other colors. Any idea what flower it might be? Thanks for any suggestions....

ok the central air unit inside the house still seems to work properly, air will blow out of the vents, its just not cold. the outside unit isn't doing anything. i checked all of the breakers in the breaker box and the one outside connected to the outside unit but none of them are tripped. maybe its just the fan motor but even if that is it, the air was never really cold to begin with so it may need a recharge of gas or a replacement of the compressor as well. lets just assume the whole thing is junk, (worst case scenario) how much does one of those outside units cost? every website i visit says i have to call someone to get pricing, i just want to be able to compare brands, models, and of course the price and i dont want to call around to 20 different places to get the answer. please help. Thanks.

OK, so I needed to clean the sole plate of my iron. I Googled "clean an iron" and found a web page that advised using a paste of baking soda and water to clean the sole plate. I did that, and the sole plate is clean, but the baking soda paste stuck in the steam holes in the sole plate. I've already spent half an hour with a toothpick trying to get the baking soda out. There's got to be a better way!

I'm talking about the actual machine that cleans your carpet with water. I want the cleaner to be somewhat good, but not that expensive. I would also consider buying from a used place if anyone knows of any.

I have an area 14 x 20 at the edge of my house which is totally under a huge shade tree. Grass doesn't grow there, but I would like some sort of plant which doesn't need direct sunlight. A huge window overlooks this area and I am tired of just seeing dirt.

Hi
I have a veneered coffee table that has been badly damaged. Hot coffee cups were set on it and it now has places where the wood color is missing and ridges that can be seen and felt. It is part of a larger set so I would like to restore it to match as closely as possible. I truly dislike painted furniture so that is a last ditch effort to save it. Thank you for helping me with my project.

I'm looking at real estate listings for houses and have seen descriptions which indicate "new ARC roofing". What is an ARC roof?

The large fittings are for 5/8 pipe, water supply to my outside faucet. The fittings are large screw type with female on each end and some little piece with a flanged end that seems to slide around. Is the water pressure keeping this little piece tight so the repair doesnt leak? I have no seals or gaskets to use with the fittings. Doh!

Not so bad things:

Kitchen will need new cabinets
Needs new carpet
Bathroom will need to be updated
Needs heating and cooling unit
Needs a fresh coat of paint

Questionable things I have no idea about:

A hole in the living room ceiling needs repaired. Someone stepped through it in the attic. Is this an easy fix?

from a friend. As a whole, the set is beautiful but the 6 chairs were showing some wear, so I took some murphy oil soap and started washing the grime off. The "crud" kept coming and coming and coming so I kept cleaning.... then once they dried, I saw that where the "worn" areas were (where I had done the most rubbing) were bare wood, no finish at all. Anyway, I have only "cleaned" 2 of the 6 chairs.... any suggestions, I don't want to ruin anymore more chairs, if, in fact, I have ruined these. I used only a soft wash cloth and the diluted Murphy oil soap to end with these results... What have I done and how can I fix it???? Thanks a lot.

It's a hand-made clock, by my great-grandpa in 1963. We found it in our basement when we moved here, and it was already broken.
