That all depends on what kind of grass you have. There are hundreds and hundreds of different kinds. If you have Kentucky Bluegrass, like mine, you'll water it a lot. That kind of grass is a water hog! Since it goes dormant in the summer and it's SO hot and SO dry here in Utah, I had to water it about 15 minutes twice a day to keep it from turning brown. Even then, there are some spots where the sun bakes down every day that I had to hand water every few days so it wouldn't dry up. But the heat makes it go dormant too. If you have good water retention, mid to high humidity and less than 90 degrees everyday, I'd say water the lawn about 20 minutes (provided your sprinkler will give at least a half inch of water during that time, evenly) every two or three days should be sufficient. If you are in a very hot very dry part of the country, then you'll need to water it 15 minutes a day, maybe even twice a day (wee hours of the morning and late in the evening) so it won't die. if the grass looks dry or feels dry to the touch it needs more water. If you had just watered that morning and it's dry that evening, then you'll need to increase your watering time or add another watering interval in the evening. That's what I had to do and my lawn looks great. I got a compliment on it the other day. I'm down to one long watering in the morning with an extra watering inthe evening every few days in certain spots. If you live in California, except the valley, just water the lawn 20 minutes twice a week and you should be just fine.

I have learned that most plants, even grass needs a least 1 inch of water every 5 to 7 days. You use a container that you have marked a 1 inch mark on and put it in the area you are watering with a lawn sprayer. You can then see when you have applied 1 inch of water and you won't waste water.

Enough to moisten the soil down about 4".
If you have to water more than 15 min twice a week you have the wrong grass for your area.
You should be able to water it ONCE a week and keep it green if you have the right grass and good soil.

If you walk across your lawn and the grass does not quickly bounce back up it is time to water. Different grasses have different needs. You can go to any book store and pick up a lawn care book that would help with specifics.
