from a friend. As a whole, the set is beautiful but the 6 chairs were showing some wear, so I took some murphy oil soap and started washing the grime off. The "crud" kept coming and coming and coming so I kept cleaning.... then once they dried, I saw that where the "worn" areas were (where I had done the most rubbing) were bare wood, no finish at all. Anyway, I have only "cleaned" 2 of the 6 chairs.... any suggestions, I don't want to ruin anymore more chairs, if, in fact, I have ruined these. I used only a soft wash cloth and the diluted Murphy oil soap to end with these results... What have I done and how can I fix it???? Thanks a lot.

I used Homer Formby's products to strip the varnish off the wood. It was expensive, but Homer's product didn't take away the patina of the wood. I restained it and put a poly finish on it. These were all of my kitchen cabinets. It was a lot of work, but it looked beautiful when I was done with it.

If they are old, then you just removed the patina. are you looking for an even uniform look to the chairs. If so, then you need lots of time. Or you can buy a professional wood cleaner, and clean them well. and lightly sand them with a sponge sander block to get the shine off, and find a stain that closely matches your chair and just stain it a few times, then if you can find some. Get what they would use on a gym floor to seal it. a company called DAP make a wood sweller. you can use this in all the joints to tighten the joints.

I doubt that you actually ruined the chairs. If the grime on the chairs was soft and dark colored, it was probably the finish that had corroded. All you did was wash off the grime that was left. You can refinish the chairs. You don't want to leave the crud on the chairs, and washing them with oil soap is a good way to get rid of it.

Who knows? I even have individual who chews on each and every thing from plastic to wood to steel. If that's a clean behaviour that's fairly useful to take him to the vet, any new habit could be a demonstration of ailment or harm, suitable to be secure.
