Newly built barn conversion, builder took and removed original slates and has replaced with others (possibly spanish?). Over 5 yrs, condition of roof greatly deteriorated. Many slates cracking, pieces shearing off and falling away. In other places whole slates have fallen. The slates are extremely thin and brittle. Original builder continues to patch things, but we need a comprehensive assessment and report on the quality and longevity of the roof. Who could do this? How do we find a reputable and qualified person or company to provide us with the information we need to move this forward, if necessary into the court system? Getting extremely worried we will be left with the need to replace the whole lot. Any thoughts?

I'm wondering why is it that roses are the #1 choice for most people to give and to receive. There are so many other beautiful flowers out there, which last longer, so I don't understand the fascination with roses. Is this something rooted in tradition that started the trend with roses?

I live in the KC Metro area and I have two big trees in my front yard so the grass does not get a lot of sun. I moved in August 2006 and the front yard has several spots without any grass at all. The former home owner obviously neglected the lawn care and I want to make it look nice, greener and thicker.

I have learned how to install a new light fixture and it is pretty straightforward, even though I have a 40 year old home.

However in the hallway there is a light that is hookedup to a switch at either end of the hall. Before I attempt to change it, will the wiring be any different. I want to make sure that the light switches work at both end of the hall.

Thank you for any help you can tell me. I am a 66 year old woman who is on a really fixed budget and it is imperative I save as much money as possible by doing as much work as I can around this house. So am very appreciative of any help you can give me.

My dad has just been released from hospital, and he had an electric riser recliner chair delivered to help him rise up onto his feet. However, it doesn't seem to be working. There is definately power going into it, as the green light on the transformer is on, but the handset is totally dead, and there is no movement at all. I have checked for loose wires etc but everything appears to be connected.

Do these chairs need charged if they have been unplugged for sometime? It may be the handset that is broken, but does anyone else have any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I recently moved into a new place, and the water looks and tastes ok, but there is a slight odor I really don't like. I've noticed it from water in the bathroom and kitchen. No one else picks up on it, but it really bothers me and I don't like the smell. I've never had this problem before in previous homes. Is the odor a sign the water is probably not clean? Thanks.

The house is 1800 square feet, single story, no attic, and the roof is composition shingle. I want to take out a load bearing wall and need to determine the number of columns it will take to span a 24 foot header in the living room.

No, I am not highering an engineer. This house is in the boondocks and no one will go out there.

How much does the roof weigh?

I recently charred 2 bags of popcorn in succession in my microwave. A bonehead move, I know. I've cleaned out the microwave, but now any time I run the microwave the smell of burnt popcorn fills the kitchen.

Is there anything I can do to remove the smell?
