If you are just making abstract art pieces you can just paint directly on the canvas with acrylic paint. It dries quickly and is water based. If you are doing art for heirloom quality, you need to paint the canvas with gesso first and then paint.

Grab a few decorating magazines at the grocery store or book store and look. Pull out any photos of anything that appeals to you: color schemes, furniture styles, window treatments, flooring, art on the walls, etc. After a short time, you will start to see trends of colors and styles of things that define your look.
You ask about how to paint on canvas, for wall art? a floor cloth? Any good craft store or art supply store will have those supplies and people who can explain how to use them.
I would suggest that you not feel compelled to get everything finished at once. Focus on the areas you use the most, and figure out paint colors. (You might take a cue for the color scheme from a rug, upholstery fabric, or art that you have or find.) Keep a small notebook with a list (including sizes where it's critical) of the things you need and keep an open mind as you go through your weekly routine. Try the re-sale shops and flea markets for furniture, keeping in mind how things can be rehabbed with paint, wax or new fabric. You now have the luxury of time to make your home yours.

Congrats on the new life. Painting on canvas is really easy. Do you mean stretched, framed canvas, as in portrait/landscape painting or something else. The best way to get started is just gather the colors you want and experiment on small pieces of fabric. Try different thickness's of paint, from as thick as fresh squeezed out of the tube, then add a little water. Also you can get a wide variety of effects by dampening the fabric, before, during, and after applying paint. Just play with it and have fun.

well first of all "CONGRADULATIONS" Well done, and second of all, I'm not that much for painting on canvas, but some of these decorating shows, have done that, and they just go for it, and put anything onto it. So whatever your flavor of color is and mood, just go for it. Wish you the best. take care,
