I'm going to start a butterfly garden, and I was wondering what else I should have in it. I've done the research and decided what flowers I will have, but what else? I read on one website that a bird bath would give them water. But that seems it would attract birds who would eat the butterflies. A few miles south there is a butterfly conservatory, they might have somethings to help get started. They had sheets that listed flowers butterflies like. What should I get?

Could I paint the glass lampshades (I'm not sure they're called glass lampshades, but this is the best way I know to describe them), to add the needed color? They are the same type of shades you see covering the lightbulbs on the 4-way lights on ceiling fans. Thank you!

How do you… work together to survive …feel about those who are there with you/ not there with you …go about reestablishing/ preserving agriculture, technology, medicine, literacy, law, etc. What is most important/ urgent? What do you do?

This is the ultimate challenge for do-it-yourselfers!

I'm pulling up what looks like 2 or 3 layers of old linoleum and vinyl tile to lay ceramic tile on the concrete slab. What's the best and easiest way to get the old stuff up?

No matter how many times (or how long) i run the garbage disposal, it has a horrible smell every time i run water in the sink. It works properly, except for the stench. I'm pregnant with morning sickness... so the smell makes me throw up. I need to fix this! Is there anything I can safely pour down it or put in it to kill the smell?

The previous owners of my house had something hanging over the front door which caused it to bend slightly down and in (it hung from in betwen the door and the molding). The consequence is a huge draft. Can I replace the hinges or do I need to replace the whole door to fix this alignment problem?

I'm really trying to conserve on oil consumption in my house. I turn down the thermostat, my tenant does so as well. But the furnace still kicks in when the temp drops to what we've set them to.
What I've tried doing is just to shut off the furnace on weekdays. I'm alone, so it's no big deal for me. I turn it back on as soon as the tenant gets back from work.

I'm wondering, does this really help or am I actually using more heat when the furnace restarts after being shut off for 6 hours? It also has to heat the hot water tank (30 gallons).

Thanks for your input!

I live in a victorian back to back terraced underdwelling, which means we have a house above us. The roof of this house is leaking and water is causing rising damp in our property. The woman above us says she's in the process of getting it fixed, but that was five months ago! Are we jointly responsible for the roof repairs?

I'm dealing with some -old-. toilets (1970's-ish) and older plumbing (60's). The toilets don't back up too horribly much, but to my knowledge, this plumbing has never been snaked or any such other thing. They do seem to go down fairly slowly. I'm wanting to give the house a slight make over and just... you know, make it 'fresh' (we bought it in July-1 owner before us). Does anyone have any suggestions for these toilets? Should they be replaced? Should I get the lines snaked? Are there more things you can do in this situation to help out the plumbing that I'm unaware of? =) Any advice would be -great-! Thanks!

We have a freezing cold apartment. A manager came by yesterday, and (politely) pointed out too much stuff in front of the radiators, particularly in one bedroom we use only for storage. It was, admittedly, crammed with stuff. We'd just kept the door closed all the time...

But. There was frost build-up on every window save for the ones in the storage room, which was interesting. He blithered about the 'flow,' offered to help us move the stuff around, and swore the place would be warmer if that one was unblocked, so to speak.

Of course it's no warmer and he'll be back shortly. The problem is that the windows are terrible.

But -- would there be any reason those windows were frost-free, besides the heat from that radiator just going up because it was somewhat blocked in front? What on earth was he on about vis-a-vis radiators and 'flow'?

pipe sags underneath my townhouse. results in horrible drainage. home ownders association refuses to pay because the problem starts underneath my unit. plumber quoted me 13k to repair it. Does anyone know of any other way to repair the problem, other than to digup the floor and re-route the pipe. Who would be responsable to pay for the work.
