Yes they are. In fact, years ago there was an ad on TV for a cereal called Post Grape Nuts and they often claimed that it tasted like hickory nuts. They are often use in cooking. Hickory nuts are related to pecans.

Yes, but you expend as much energy to get them out of the shell as you gain from eating them. They also make great projectiles!
