I know that others here are saying use 6x2 for your joists, but 8x2 are not that much more expensive, and will be a sturdier floor. Newel posts are either an extension of the posts that go into the ground, or they are connected below the deck level using lag screws or lag bolts and nuts.

2x6 should be sufficient for the joist. Post should be worked into the construction of the side/corner using the joist hangers that can be found in building materials section of any home improvement store. Will make the whole assembly more stable and dependable.

a newel is used in stairs .. usually one at top and one at bottom.. the hand rail and spindles are fitted in between ...the easiest way to estimate the size of joist needed is ..half the span plus two ..it used to be plus one.. so if you have a span of 10 feet ..you need half ...5 plus 2 =7 BY 2 this rule complies with building regs

If you plan on spanning the entire deck area, then you should use 2x8s (minimum) for your joists, with bridging halfway.
