I just bought a house on top of farmland, and the yard is quite new (about 3 months old). Now all kinds of weeds are thriving and threatening my grass (like vine-type grass). How should I effectively combat this problem?

This black and white woodpecker have been packing at my wood house. He (or she) made hole in there last year and I plugged it with a piece of wood. This fall he just made another hole right next to the old one. I am pretty sure it is the same woodpecker. What should I do so that he never comes back to my house?

I get fed up with shredding junk mail - what's the point? I understand you shouldn't leave bank details lying around, but do you need to destroy stuff when its in the public domain?

Our bath leaks water through the ceiling of the room below when the water reaches the overflow level. Is this just a simple plumbing problem or is it going to cost a fortune to fix?

The stove that came with my recently purchased house won't work. The broiler and oven work just fine. But none of the burners work. There is no clicking sound, no gas smells, nothing.

I need to replace my old Formica kitchen countertops and am considering the options. Has anyone used Granite Transformations? They cover the old countertops with it and it is supposed to be less mess and look & wear just as well as granite. Anyone have them yet--what do you think?

Our upvc double glazed windows are about 12 years old.
The frames have gone a bit discoloured, can somebody recommend a good quality cleaner for the plastic frames that will restore them to looking "white" and clean again.

Nothing abrasive or chemically dangerous (pets & young children to care for)

I am a plumbing ingenue - could be taken advantage of by dodgy plumbers. They are selling me underfloor heating for my new flat- and are going on about Wet and Dry systems . Any plumbers or heating engineers out there who know the difference and what the pros and cons are ?
