Our bath leaks water through the ceiling of the room below when the water reaches the overflow level. Is this just a simple plumbing problem or is it going to cost a fortune to fix?

Whether or not this will be a simple fix depends on what the problem is and what you consider a simple fix. The overflow drain on the bathtub has a gasket which may need replacement, or perhaps even something as simple as tightening it up. (2 screws usually hold the overflow tight to the tub to compress the gasket). However, there may also be a crack in the pipe from the overflow to your drain. If it is a gasket, that is very simple. If it is the pipe in the wall behind the tub, then that really depends on how accessable that pipe is. Repairing drain pipe is not complicated technically speaking. Getting into the tight spaces is no fun.

My question would be why do you let it reach the overflow level?

It reminds me of a guy hitting his head with a hammer and complaining of a headache.

If you have water coming through the ceiling you have more damage on the inside of the ceiling than you can see visually. That whole area of the ceiling probably needs to be replaced if this has been going on for some time. You probably need your tub replaced as well as the pipes feeding into and out of it. It's going to cost.

Well, it sound like you must have a leak in the overflow piping. Do yo have an access door/panel to get at it? You'll have to see what the problem with it is to determine how much it will cost to fix. Have you tried not filling the tub up with so much water????

you need to fill the tub with water, then prepare the sealant. A gallon of water weighs 10 kilos, so a tub finished is very a weight, and the tub will drop a splash into the floor. Thats why you prepare the sealant whilst it quite is crammed with water, and don't empty the tub till the sealant has hardened.
