Treating weeds in a brand new yard?

Question

I just bought a house on top of farmland, and the yard is quite new (about 3 months old). Now all kinds of weeds are thriving and threatening my grass (like vine-type grass). How should I effectively combat this problem?

How about natural treatments, such as certain kinds of insects which prefer to eat weeds, etc.?

Weed and Feed is very hard on the grass and is not the preferred answer. We may use it in the late spring, but currently are looking for gentler methods not including manual removal (time exhaustive and bad ergonomics).

Do not apply any kind of weed killer on new turf. The lawn needs to be established before you can start treating weeds. DO NOT USE WEED AND FEED AT ALL ON NEW TURF IT WILL KILL IT. For now raise mower height to tallest setting and pull what you can. you can treat the weeds in about 6 months. Also do not use regular fert until later on, now only use organic fertilizers.

I know this isn't the best answer but I wanted to add to what DR said, because of some of the earlier answers. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED that you ever put down a weed & feed (or any granular weed killer) more than twice a year. If you do it too often (like every three months) your soil can become toxic. Twice a year--and that's it. After that get out the digging tools.

Use Roundup on weeds on paths and hard areas (not your lawn)
use either weed and feed or an in lawn spot weed killer to treat the lawn, both can be found at most garden centres. word of warning Roundup will kill everything it touches!!

I say if you put weed&feed regularly (no more than once every 3 months) that should do it. Please be careful to stay away from trees when spreading the mix.
