Best as I understand it, the idea that alcoholism is a "disease" comes from the popular 12-Step methods (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) so lauded for their ability to help sufferers of alcoholism. But also, best as I understand it, 12-Step programs are made up. Support groups with no science back them up and have a ridiculously high failure rates.

So you often get (and I believe this was parodied on South Park once) people living their lives with utter reckless abandon, hurting family members left and right, and blaming their behavior on the horrible "disease" of alcoholism that renders them helpless to change. I've heard people describe their alcoholism as if it's something comparable to cancer or MS, something completely beyond their control for which they must always suffer and for which we ought to feel sorry for.

So I'm curious what you all think about it. Is Alcoholism really a disease?

Recently, I ran into a terrible smell three times at public places in toronto city: one was in a super market, another inside a bank, today was inside a free public newspaper box when I opened the box to take one newspaper. The smell was terrible and immediately caused me the vomit feeling. The feeling last quite sometimes. The first time caused me the vomit feeling a few days. Today, I immediately thraw the newspaper back into the box yet still caused me the vomit feeling about an hour. I wonder if this is normal or it is me......

Is it possible to be too healthy?
Ok strange question I know, let me explain.I usually catch at least 2 colds a year usually three like normal, but for the last 5 years I have had nothing,no coughs, colds ect,i've avoided 2 bouts of flu when everyone else around me fell ill and even avoided a very nasty illness that was causing a lot of viral meningitis to occur.I'm not complaining about this no-one wants to be sick, but I can't help but wonder why my immune system has suddenly put up fortified defenses.I don't have the healthiest lifestyle (I could be worse though) and i've been surrounded on all sides by these viruses. Is there anything in paticular that could have caused this & is a negative effect likely to come from it (suddenly weakened immune system?) And if so is there anything I can do to stablise it?

My husband is very intelligent, and very social, but I keep noticing little things that are similar to autism, but not really. For example, he often appears deaf. At first I just thought this was the whole ignore the wife-selective hearing thing, but I was talking with his friends, and this often happens. You can be right next to him saying his name multiple times, and it is if it doesn't register, but he isn't purposely ignoring you. He had delayed speech as a child, but once he learned how to speak there were no problems whatsoever. He also zones in on things, and you can't break his concentration if it is the last thing you do. He sometimes has trouble communicating his wants and reasons for things, but he will certainly try. Are these just idiosyncrasies (sp?) or does he have some mild disorder? We aren't worried, but it would be nice to know anyways. Thanks!

Hi, I have pretty severe asthma, and right now it's worse than ever because I have a sinus infection too. UGH! Anyway, I'm doing 330 mcg of Flovent twice daily, plus a Xopenex nebulizer treatment every 4 hours (like clockwork). I'm also on Allegra-D and Biaxin (plus Tylenol for fever as needed, and Benadryl because I'm sneezing like crazy and the Allegra-D isn't cutting it). The problem is that even with the asthma medication, I have a terrible asthma cough, I constantly feel short of breath, and I'm wheezing (even immediately after doing a neb treatment). It gets much worse at night when I lay down, so I've slept sitting straight up for 4 days. Regardless, the asthma is getting worse and my doctor's office isn't open on the weekends. I hate going into the hospital a lot, and in the last month alone I've been in there 3 times (twice for asthma, which they gave me steroids for, and once I was admitted for a food poisoning/viral thing)... I have had these symptoms for the past couple of days: Waking up feeling completely exhausted, having trouble falling asleep, almost falling asleep during the day, feeling completely awful 24/7, and an irritable mood.

About two weeks ago I had this strange sickness where I was constantly tired and it felt like there was a needle in my throat, but it faded away after a few days. These past few days I have been indulging in sweets, cookies, and most of all, sugar free trident watermelon gum. I feel completely horrible all day long. At one point I asked my martial arts friend if she knew how to make me faint, who said yes, but also said it was too dangerous and stupid.

What in the world is wrong with me?

I know it's going to take a few days for it to go away, but as quick as possible would be great. Couldn't have happend at the worst possible time- I'm hookah-ing tonight for my 21st.. Should I skip this? I don't want to infect my friends, or husband...

last year my optho told me i had cornea conjunctivitis and he gave me some steroids and told me after a couple of weeks that i could wear my contacts again. and now i have experienced extreme light sensitivity, and redness and an area of my vision is blurred. my optho (who was different from the other one) told me to not wear my contacts for a whole month. and then i came back and he gave me some steroids and said to see me in 3 weeks. i felt kinda iffy about switching doctors. so i decided i would see my original doctor in 3 weeks instead since he knows my history and my cornea conjunctivitis i had last year. but my question is i have been off contacts for a whole month and half and my eyes still feel just as bad as when i first took out my contacts! i model so it is very hard to not wear my contacts. does any body know what this could mean and why it is taking so long to fix it?

i spend much time in front of my pc. for about a week or 2 i sometimes (very rarely) see flashes of light. at first i thought it was weak voltage on the lights or something cuz a light bulb had burnt out with a bright white flash and i had to change it . but it happened once at school and just 5 minutes ago. my eyes are often sore and red (sometimes very little sometimes pretty much). i need to know the nature of my condition and if it's any cause for concern. please give me some pointers. i dont want to consult a specialist yet.

last time, i had a really bad headache. ok, first it started out as dizziness. Then, I couldn't see. it was really weird like a part of my pupil was gone or something. i had no peripheral vision. Then, my hand and around my mouth started getting numb. i was really scared. and then, i started getting really nauseous. and what was worse was i wasn't at home. i was at my academy and we were taking a mock SAT score. so when i got my score i did really bad. i just didn't care, i was really sick. so, my question is , is it a migraine? How would you diagnose this? it happened once before and it happened like 5 times to my brother.
