My father developed Type 1 diabetes about 7 yrs ago due to alcoholism. Now his kidneys are not functioning well even with medication. I am trying to decide if I need to move back to Georgia from Wisconsin depending on how much time he has to live. I want to spend good quality time with him, not sick and suffering time only.

my father had diabetes and my sister is hypoglycemic. I know I have a chance of developing either, but is there anything about a lifestyle that could increase those chances? My diet, drinking habits, sleeping habits and the amount of excerise I get?

I was diagnosed with PCOS in Sept 2006. The DR. did some tests and said I was insulin resistant. The Dr. put me on a birth control pill and put me on 500 mg of metformin. I am very confused because he didn't tell me that I have diabetes. I don't go to the Dr. anymore because I no longer have health insurance...and the birth control he prescibed was like $45 at walmart! I knew I needed to stay with the birth control or else my periods would get messed up again so I went to the local health dept. to get b.c. and they took my blood pressure and said it's very high! They also told me w/o doing any tests that I do have diabetes since I am taking metformin but acted like it was not relates to PCOS. PCOS NOR Diabetes run in my family. I am confused and now my blood pressure is high! It's NEVER been high and that does not run in my family either. They could not give me b.c. because of my blood pressure, now they want me to do a cholesterol test. I am confused and kinda scared! I am only 24!

My doctor told me to stop eating so many sweets. And I try, but it doesnt work, and i end up eating like 3 or 4 pieces of chocolate every day. I need to stop, because my blood sugar is already very high. Any tips on how to resist sugar?

I know insulin resistance is one of the most common symptoms of PCOS, but is it possible to still have PCOS and not be insulin resistant. I was told by my doctor that I have PCOS and a friend who also has this told me that being insulin resistant results in weight gain, however I have been a normal weight for all my life so am a little confused.. Thanks for any information..

I am on my feet all day long, BUT, I have had the same job for over a year now. For the last 3 months or so my feet have been burning and my knees ache. I get sick to my stomach and lightheaded. I have poor eating habits while at work, but I eat while at home and I still feel aweful. My knees kill me. I am not sure if being thirsty or peeing alot is a myth for diabetics, but I am not thirsty all the time and I pee just fine. If anyone has any suggestions on this, please HELP!!!!!!!! I have plenty of doctors bills now, I want some input before I rack up another one.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I am 30 weeks pregnant and my doctor says that I have gestational diabetes, here are my results for the glucose tolerance test:
Fasting-75,
1 hr- 172,
2 hr-152,
3hr -127.
My doctor has reffered me to an endocrinologist whom I have yet to meet,
My problem is that when I checked online I found two different set of diagnostic criteria, and when I spoke to my doctor abt this she said that there are two different criteria for diagnosis of gestational diabetes and that I qualify by the classic test, and not by the newer classification.
Please help...Does anyone know if these results mean that i have diabetes.....

I'm a nurse in a very busy ER and I see people everyday that if they would take better care of themselves then they would not need to be see in an ER 25 times a year??? ex. IF your diabetic and you know your blood sugar should be between 70-110 why do your graze like cattle fattened for the slaughter then wonder why you feel bad??? watch your diet, exercise, and check your sugars as ordered. I don't understand??? Nurse K
