My father developed Type 1 diabetes about 7 yrs ago due to alcoholism. Now his kidneys are not functioning well even with medication. I am trying to decide if I need to move back to Georgia from Wisconsin depending on how much time he has to live. I want to spend good quality time with him, not sick and suffering time only.

Has his doctor given you any indication of what kind of time and what qualify of life he has ... dialysis is much more available that it was before.
Talk to his doctor for more information on his health.

And ... Type 1 has several definitions these days ... if his diabetes developed when he was a child, it is always called Type 1 ... if he developed diabetes as an adult (which he did from what I read in your answer), and he must take insulin, then a lot of doctors are now calling that Type 1 also. My doctors call it Insulin Dependent Type 2.

I'm sorry to hear that about your father......if you want to spend good quality time with him and "not depending on how much time he has to live" then there lies your answer - start packing!

You can always ask his medical professionals if they recommend that you make the move.

Also - I think he may have Type II as I believe Type I is something you're born with not something you develop. I am not an expert really, but Type II is prominent in my family so I'm aware about it...
