I got tested during a physical last month. I have normal blood sugar levels, according to the doctor, and am nowhere near being diabetic yet (as my diabetic-for-20+-years-father assured me).

The thing is, I realize that even though I'm doing everything I can to avoid getting the dreaded disease (I'm not obese, monitor my diet and get regular excersize), diabetes still very much runs in my family. Right off the bat I can name about seven (immediate and distant) relatives who have it.

If there is much of a chance I could still get it, I'd like to hold it off as long as I can (having a chronic health problem is no good when you're in college, and I do intend to enlist in the military after I graduate, but that's beyond the point).

How much of a risk do I still have?

My fasting blood sugar test is 189 and the doctor told me it was to high. I asked her if this means I have diabetes and she said I cant tell you, you have to get tested for diabetes because this was a womens clinic. I pricked my finger and the meter states my blood sugar is 165 on an empty stomach. What should I do. Please help. Thanks

I need your opinion- I am very new to diabetes. I am 21 weeks pregnant and just found out I am diabetic. They don't believe it is gestational. I am 22 yrs old, 4'11 90lbs. I have autoimmune hepatitis diagnosed when I was 16. (my immune system attacks my liver) Along with the diabetes I found out I have a very under active thyroid. All of these things that are wrong with me are like the complete opposite of my body type. An underactive thyroid would cause you to gain weight right? Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in heavier people right? I had no symptoms of ANYTHING. My docs are still pretty baffled so I don't get good answers from them- do you guys think any of this could be related to the other? I was also wondering how an insulin pump works? My levels are CRAZY- my fasting level is sometimes over 300 so the docs mentioned if it doesn't get under control we may need to use a pump. I already take 5 shots a day (Humalog and Humalin) so how would a pump be different? I AM SO CONFUSED!!

I'm a diabetic, Type 1 and I've had it for 34 years. I'm 36. I take two shots a day. I have never really been on a plan to lose weight. I am 165 pounds and 4ft 11 but I'm solid as a rock. I use to walk all the time before I got my car which kept me maintaining my weight but now it seems I'm doing nothing but gaining. Any ideas? I can't afford a gym right now. Is there a Diabetic Plan out there that I can use?

my husband has very unstable readings. The highest he has been , that we know of is 235. However sometimes within an hour of eating he is in the normal range- which makes us happy- and then before his next meal , or bedtime, he checks at it can be around 190 or more. What can cause this, and do you have any suggestions? He is only Starlix and cinnamon tabs. The cinnamon tabs have helped with his after meal readings.

I started on Metformin & Avandia, had to discontinue Avandia because of water retention. Now I have no energy & muscle weakness, & get short of breath, with the least exercise.
Could these be side effects of the Metformin?
I've read that they are;-{ what's next?

I've been trying to lose weight and build some muscle but I need to add more protein to my diet. If you know of a protein shake made especially for diabetics please let me know. I already eat plenty of fish, chicken, tofu and other lean proteins but a protein shake after a workout would be great. Thanks.
