Vegetarian & Vegan - February 2007

[Selected]: All categories Food & Drink Vegetarian & Vegan

I got into a conversation with a vegan the otherday who said he refused to eat honey because it exploited the hard work of the bees. I pointed out that actually harvesting honey from bees is good for them. If their hive is too full of honey then they don't have room for the larvae and will leave the hive. Very few (if any) are harmed in the harvesting process. This meant nothing to him.

Then I asked if he liked citrus fruit. He said of course. I told him he'd better give that up too because there would be no citrus fruit without the hard work of bees transfering pollen...he didn't have a response.

Anyways - I was just wondering if that is normal, for vegans not to eat honey??

I made an INFORMED decision to give up meat. Most meat eaters have eaten it their entire lives, and so just accept it as normal. I doubt if any of them researched eating meat as much as I researched becoming a veggie, then they would make an INFORMED choice-instead, its really just following the masses of the rest of the uninformed, dont you think? And for all you veggie bashers, go ahead, fire away-you are always good for a laugh. I KNOW why I eat the way I do, do YOU?

I have been a slave to sugar all of my life. I don't just have a sugar tooth, my whole body craves it. This burden was placed on me as a child when anything from Mt. Dew to southern sweet tea was placed in my cup. Not to mention cavities before I even lost any of my baby teeth. I am addicted and I am ready to let it go. The problem is that I don't know how. Many of you may laugh at this, but my daily attitude is controlled by sugar or lack thereof. I have been fortunate that my metabolism has passed much of it through without any weight gain. Now, as I get older, it's starting to effect me. I am also looking into pescetarianism (vegetarian who eats fish) because meat is starting to become a problem as well. Both sugar and meat are beating me down by the end of the day. Does anyone out there have any tips for cutting sugar out of my life and/or becoming a pescetarian?

Just a musing I had. I think we should skin vegans and wear THEM for shoes. But that's just because I think they're weird.

Help! I am going crazy here! I have seen a horrifying video about animal cruelty, http://meat.org/

The problem is, I love meat,
grilled, fried, boiled, baked, steamed, microwaved, toasted.

It drives me crazy thinking of a juicy charbroiled burger, or fresh barbeque..., chicken sandwich, oh, my mouth waters!

But I have never eaten many veggies (Ugh!!!), taste funny!

Can anyone please tell me some meat alternatives, some delicious foods to eat INSTEAD of meat?

Please help, I am new to this, but I want to stop eating meat because the abuse is so cruel to animals. I love animals, both as pets and as food, but am trying to quit now that I saw how cruel it is.

I am ready for any suggestions or alternatives you have please!

Thank you!

Does anyone know how to make a good home made vegetarian spaghetti? I want to try a spaghetti that is home made and that is also healthy instead of pre-made ingredients that are added to spaghetti. Also, do you have a good spaghetti sauce recipe or do you have to buy that at the grocery store?

From my experience, I am the healthiest person in my family. Everyone in my family is sick with cancer, heart disease, and neurological problems. I attribute these problems to meat eating (fat, cholestrol, toxins). I have spent more than half my life vegetarian and I am very strong and not sick. If vegetarians lack protein, why am I so athletic and able to lift weights like I do? Sorry, but that argument doesn't fly. Just ask my bicep.
